Commercial.

AUCKLAND. New Zealand ETebald Office, Saturday afternoon. To-day a large quantity of hay was brought into town for sale at auction, more perhaps than we recollect seeing for several years past. Forty-ono waggon loads were sold by Mr. Alfred Buckland at -1b to 4s ' 9d for best quality, and from 2s 6d to 3s Gd for middling. Mr. Georgo Sibbin sold at auction to-day, 36,000 feet sawn kauri boards and e rant ling, at very low prices ; the bulanco of the consignment will be sold on Tuesday next. To-day Messrs. Turrell and Tonks sold at auction maize, Gs per bushel; ouionß, Ijd per lb.; and potatoes, £2 10s to £3 15s per ton. SYDNEY. The stock nnd share brokers report rather a quiet week. Iho demand for bank stock continues, and shares of companies having their half-yearly meetings next month meet with more inquiry. Bank of Now South Wall's, Commercials, und Joint Stocko are steady at laßt week's rates. Commercials, of Melbourne, were sold at £3 6s. Citys are improving; sales at close have boon made at 10J; Bank of New Zoalands are easier, and changod hands at 17- In steam shares there have been considerable sales of A. S.N.s, at late rates, and also at a decline of Ss ; Illawarras brought last week's rates. Transactions in insuranno shares are limited ; tho only sales reported havo been New South Wales Marine and Unitods at last weok's prices. Wallsend coal continues steady at 6J. Peak Downs copper continuo saleable at 19s to 20b. Transactions in debentures havo not been so extensive as usual. New South Wales terminables have been dono at 90 ; Queensland Treasury bills have again advanced, 107?;- has been paid for those duo in 1870 ; City of Sydney, due in 1872, were placed at 95. The following table will show tho closing quotations of tho stock and share market, and the rates at which business have been done during the week :— I I

Advices from Hongkong are to April 29 th, and from Shanghai to the 22nd. The Atrevida was loading at; the former port for Sydney, and the Joshua Bates for Melbourne. Australian coals were quoted at 9 and- 10 dollars per ton. The cargo ex Yang Tsze brought 9A- dollars. Of the tea market at Shanghai we learn that nearly the whole of the small Btock of black tea left on the market has been taken, and the season may bo considered closed. Purchases have been made at rather easier rates, teamen being quite ready to meet buyers. Sales of 2500 chest 3 Ningchowj common to fair, at Tls. 19.5 to 21.5, and 1900 chests common kinds were effected- Green teas—-The settlements fire again loss than for the previous fortnight, although teamen are getting bo anxious to get back into the country, that while some.have shipped the remainder of their stock r on their own account to England, the rest are quite willing to accept a considerable decline, even on the last mail's rates. The supply of Australian coal'was not equal to the demand ; sales had been made, to arrive, at 9J taels. Quotations on the spot II taels, equal to £3 6s per ton. An unusually dull week has been passed in commercial circles, and the amount of business dono has been quite nominal. Advices from the interior report an improvement in the scute of the roads, which ought, to give an improved tone to the markets,.especially as it is known that country storekeepers ] have been allowing their stocks to get down very* low. Large supplies of breadstuff* have come to band during the week, but owing to an improvement in the Adelaide- markets holders are_ not disposed to force sales, and a firmer feeling is manifest, but as yet without leading to any change in prices. Wheat has been sold at 5s per bushel, and sm tll lots of silk dressed flour at £12 10s to £13. Candles are better held, and full weights may be quoted at id higher. There is little doing in liquors, beera have a declining tendency. Genevas have been asked for, but no important, sales have been made. Bum is easier. Shipments advised for the month, exclusive of the Dartmouth's, amount .to '21,613 gallons. Martell's and Hennessy's brandies have been done at a slight.advance, and as the tone of English advices is favourable, holders look for a better market. The -sugar .market continues very dull. A fine assortment of Mauritius sorts was offered for sale at auction, but without leading to - any large amount of business. The cargo of the Western Star is advertised for sale by auction early next week. In teas transactions. have been, confined, to trade requirements, principally in low and medium congous. The Finke Senior's cargo, which arrived during the week, and may bo considered as the closing importation of the season, is not yet offering. Rice remains quiet; sales of new Patna at£26 10s to £28, according to quantity. Oilmen's stores and provisions command very full rates. New hams and bacons are a trifle easier. Fine cheese continues very scarce. The commercial community will be pleased to perceive the announcement contained in our telegram that the afimrs of Messrs. Christopher Newton, Brother, and Co. have been satisfactorily arranged on terms which speak well for confidence which their London creditors have in the firm. The news respecting the value of our staple product is unsatisfactory, and especially eo as a large portion of the Sydney clip would be offered at the May sales. The market is reported as showing a tendency to great depression in prices, especially in greasy ; and except much improvement occurs in home and export trade, a serious decline was anticipated in medium and faulty descriptions. Stock on hand, 100,000 bales. The sales were to commence on May 16th, but all wools arriving after the 9th were to be' excluded therefrom. , Other items of commercial news are as follow :— Sugar.—Trade dull, prices 9d to Is per cwt. lower. Coffee.—ls to ls 6d per cwt. lower. Rite.—Firm, at 3d per cwt. advance. Wheat and Flour.—Rather easier. Best brands, 27s to 31s per barrel.

Spirits;— Corn spirits unaltered ; brandies, firm ; wines, off; all descriptions lower; rum, prices maintained, but market quiet. Metalß.—Copper, £2 to £S per ton lower ; latest price for Wallaroo, £80. Tallow.—Australian mutton, £45; beef, £44 10s. Leather.—Limited sales of Australian ; late prices barely maintained. Hides.—ln active demand, at full rites. All offered at public sales sold readily. Oils. —Lower ; best double compass, £11 10s sperm, £138. "Whalebone. — Davis Straits, £420 ; Southern £400. MELBOURNE.

Business in the import market presents little or no improvement, transactions to day having generally been on a very moderate scale. In hreadstuffs we note that sales of Victorian coast wheat have been effected at 4a Gd. In flour there is extremely little doing. Maize is quoted at 3a 7d, but of the arrivals to hand this morning comparatively few sales have yet been made. By auction, the carga of sugar per Sarah, and a portion of the JTlatworth's car go, were offered A large attendance was attracted, and buyers would have operated more extensively had importers met their views more readily. 2000 bags were disposed of at very full rates : 31s to 33s 6d was realised for low to medium counters ; 34s 3d to 35s for aood counters ; 363 to 36s 9d for fine counters ; 37s 61 to 38s 6d for low to middling white Crystals ; and 39s to 40s for good to fine white. In metals we hear of sheet lead being inquired for in the bay, and buyers offer equal to £27 in town. In provisions we continue to note a very free salo at laid for Sinclair's or Coey'a hams, and 14Jd for bacon, in bond. Large cheese, of fine quality, is scarce, and wanted, and prices for such descriptions have advanced u halfpenny. We quote Tho do* mand for Patna rice is very light. Trade sales are mentioned at £26 10s to £27. Kerosene oil maintains a quiet aspect; small parcels of beat brands have been quilted at 2s 9d. Kales of colza oil have also been made at 6s, for drums. _ Woolpacks are beginning to attract more attention, and business is said to be pending. Teas are in moderately fair request. Sales are not extensive, but parcels are disposed of at prices ranging from Is for low to Is 5d for good common congous, and up to 2s 3d for fine qualities. In liquids we hear of a parcel of Martell's-pala brandy in hogsheads having changed hands on private terms. Halss of Whitbread's bulk stout are reported at £5. The creditors of Mr. Gr, W. Thain, alarmed at his absence from business, met together to-day to consider what steps should be taken for their mutual protection, and-authorised Mr. Peterson to initiate proceedings for the purpose of sequestrating the estate. From what could be gathered from, the imperfect data which came before the meeting, it was ascertained that the liabilities to local creditors amount to £5000.—Argus, June 13.

HOB ART TOWN;

"We liayo no change to note iu the state of tllO markets to day, and we have heard of no important sales. Prices continue aa under: Flour, £10 10s per ton ; wheat, 4s 4d to 4s 6d per bushel; sharps, £6 per ton; bran, la per buahel; oats, 2a 6d to 3s per

LAUNCESTON. We have no alteration to report in the breadstuffs markets since our last quotations. "Wheat 3s lOd per bushel; flour, £9 5s per ton j oats, 2a to 2s 3d per bushel; bran, £5 per ton ; potatoes, £2 15s to £3 5s per ton, latter with bags in : hay, £2 10s tier ton.—Times, June 10.

ADELAIDE. Flour. One hundred tons have been sold in barrels at £11 per ton. "Wheat—A large parcel and Bomo sm&ll6r lots h&Yc cliciugefl ii&nds at 4s od. per bushel. General merchandize— To-day business has presented rather a mare active aape ct than usual. Inquiries for salt have been made, and though we" have not yet heard of any positive s:iles, we have no doubt they will lead to business. There is a fir mness in the market for teas, counter and light brown sugars.—Register, J"une 6.

LONDON IIOXJEr MARKET.

There has been less general gloom in the various markets to-day, and a fractional recovery has been established in consols, while in foreign securities a more distinct improvement has taken place. The Paris Bourse continues dull, but the Berlin "quotations this morning were more favorable. Further steady purihases for investment have been made in consols, and there have been also some transactions by operators on the strength of the private let tera from France, which state llut day by day as the question of war is discussed, t' e anxiety of the people at large that it may be honorably averted becomes more manifest. The trading interests of the country have now assumed a preponderance that renders it vain to judge of.the desires ot the nation by any reference to previous occasions, even the period Bince 1859 having wrought a wonderful change in that respect. The first bargains in consols were at yesterday's price—9oJ to J, and the final quotation was 903. t 0 x. Bank stock left off at 251 to 253 ; reduced and new 3 per cents., 89g- to J. India 217 to 219; India 5 per cents., 11U to Kupee Paper, 102J to 103§, and 107£ to 10S£; India Bonds, 47s to 52s pm.; and the Exchequer bills, 20s to 25s p.m. In the Stock there has been an increased demand for money, and the terms have ranged between 2 and 3 per cent., some applications having been made to the Bank for advances at tha latter rate.—Times, April 26. The Economist of April 20th states :—The report of the directors of the Australian Mortgage, Land, and Finance Company, to be presented to the shareholders on the 26th instant, states that the dividend will be at the rate of 10 per cent, per annum, and that £8000 will be carried to the reserve fund-

WOOL MAEEET.

Since the close of the sales there has been very little doing, the market remaining very quiet, and ■with a tendency to depression, it iB difficult to sell at last sales' rates ; the few contracts made have been at the slightest advance, and that with difficulty. The heavy arrivals, already reaching 100,000 bales, caused buyers to bid for anything -with caution, and the quiet state of trade in the north induces manufacturers to work up all old stock rather than in the present aspect of affairs purchase except for the most pressing re quirements.

Without there should be a great improvement in the home and export trade, we look for lower prices, and in medium and faulty descriptions the decline may be serious. Greasy wools, even at the low range of prices, do not give satislaction, and we look for a further fall, notwithstanding the apparent cheapness of many of this description sold in March, at lOd to lid per lb.—Some Ncics, April 26.
