SHORTLAND HOUSE SEMINARY.
Mid-winteb Vacation.—On Thursday evening last the elder pupils of Mrs. Lewis's Seminary, Shortland-Etreet, assembled at the usual breaking up ball for the mid-winter holidays. There were about 70 or 80 of the pupils present, besides a good sprinkling of their parents and guardians. The rooms were most tastefully decorated with evergreens, flowers, &c., which spoke highly for the taste displayed by the fair boarders of the establishment. We also notieod the walls of the school room were hung with several drawings and xriaps executed in the best style by some of the pupils, and told well for the skilful tuition of their precept- 1 resses. This half year Miss Hopper and Miss Langsford are the winners of the good conduct and med.,l prizes. Dancing and singing formed the evening's enjoyment, which terminated "shortly after 12 o'clock, to the great satisfaction of everyone, all having thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and thanks to the kindness and courtesy of Mrs. Lewis spent a very happy evening. We cannot conclude, however, without making a passing remark upon the really creditable manner in which the pupils performed several duetts, glees, songs, &c.,_ on the piano, besides rendering some good singing, the prettiest of which was the duett " Many happy returns of the day." The junior pupils of this establishment assembled at their breaking-up party last evening.
