FATAL DUEL.

On Monday week last, a meeting took place, in Wellington, between W. V. Brewer, Esq., and H. Ross, Esq., both members of the legal profession. The quarrel- originated in some legal difference which arose in the County Court. Upon the first exchange of shots Mr. Brewer was seriously wounded ; he was immediately conveyed to a friends house. During the first few days it was hoped that his life was safe, but appearances afterwards became unfavourable, and on Monday last, about six in the evening Mr. Brewer breathed his last. A Coroners Inquest was in consequencee summoned yesterday, which after hearing the evidence of several witnesses, was adjourned until to-morrow, at one o'clock. ■♦ We call attention to the official proceedings rocorded in to-day's paper, respecting the compensating the natives, resident here, for their lands in our neighbourhood. The account will be found interesting, and well worthy of perusal. / -• Banks' Peninsula has been visited, since January, by 25 French and American whalers, all bound to the north-west coast of America. The Right Rev. Dr. Selwyn, Bishop of New Zealand, remained two days at Akaroa on his way to Port Nicholson. His lordship went on board L'Rhin, where he was received with all honors due to his rank, a salute of seven guns, &c. &c. His lordship sent for Mr. Arnouss, the head Dr , and thanked him most kindly for the readiness the Dr. shows ■ at all times in bestowing his cares to the English inhabitants, and especially in two cases of a serious nature, in which the Dr. [has displayed the greatest assiduity as well as a profound knowledge of his art. The inhabitants of Akaroa are looking with great anxiety for the ibrmation of a new settlement I either at Akaroa or in its vicinity. Commandant Berard has had for some time 30 men employed in making a road round the harbour, and intends completing immediately the roads leading to Pigeon Bay and the small lake on the main land. Commandant Berard deserves thanks for such undertakings, for they must contribute greatly to the prosperity of the future settlement, no matter whether it is composed of French or English. / It is the intention of the various whalers which have gone to cruise on the north-west coast, to return in about six months to refresh at Akaroa, when no doubt they will require large supplies. — Communicated. «, Baptized. — On Sunday, February 18, at St. Mary's, Catholic Chapel, Willis Street, by the Catholic Pastor, William Francis, son of William Salter, soldier, and Eliza his wife.
