The dry edict in the Yewnited States lias been a great windfall for the American comic papers. One of them came ont with- a special prohibition number depicting various phases of the beer and whisky drought, its front page cartoon being an impressive representation of the obsequies at the funeral of the late John Barleycorn (U.S.A.) The open coffin disclosed a large bottle of the very best lying encompassed with flowers, while a procession of mourners, representative of sports, young bloods, and hard-doers, all weeping bitterly, files slowly past. That, of course, is the sorrowing side of it. The funny side is depicted in another paper by the adventures of certain respectable citizens on an illicit beer crawl; yet another, represents a prisoner in the dock, receiving sentence, and. underneath, the words: "A thrill of horror passed over the court room as the judge pronounced the fateful words—'You are sentenced to 14 years in the United States.' "A weeping gallery, weeping "cops," and a general air of intense melancholy pervades. the picture and adds point to the joke.
