"Understandings" for Wellington Girls.

(For the New Zealand Free Lance.) As soon we are to have a boot . And shoe we all can buy, I trust that these few lines will suit To show girls' wants, and why. We want them "of fine canvas, white, To change, at will, to brown/ Or blue, or suede, or crimson bright Real chamois, soft as down. We want the uppers to our knees— And yet show stockinged calves— To take off quick with kick and ease, In case we use foot salves. They must have heels three inches high,. Though tread as they'd none, And cover up our ..ankles by Good leather, from the sun. They must reveal the silk-hosed arch Of instep, without strain, Yet able to stand up and march With khaki males, in rain. . They must not be too straightly laced, But " fit," and do a bend. With tender soles and eyelets chaste To last and wear no end. Their toes must feel as broad as seas — Though sharpened like quoit pegs— And ; never on our bunions seize - To shoot pains up our legs. And if-we want sweet sympathy, • A "slip-off heel's" the snare To catch a man, and find hath he • The cash for nice new pair. • We don't expect to dust, or clear The mud from polished sides, — A' finished shoe should keep, its, sheen . To save work for us "brides." And if they never squelch nor creakWet, dry, or caked-in ice— You'll find no women who will "squeak" At ten-and-six as price. —Gertie Goodshoes.
