BRAVE PRESIDENT WILSON.

The Case of Roumania. hard things were * * said and written about President Wilson during . America's "neutral", period tliey must all be- taken back nowadays. For Mr. f Wilson is now almost daily giving 'proof of a sincerity,- a courage, and a determination which, do him the highest credit. He. will, we. are confident, prove to the world that America is not going to be a mere bluffer in the war. The Germans themselves recognise this. Of late there has been a quite significant cessation,' at Berlin, of the insolent cry that America's entrance into the war would not affect the issue. The Hun now knows better, and it is precisely his anxiety about what is going to happen in Europe next summer, when some at least of • the force of American assistance will be felt,

which is dictating the "whirlwind offensives" by which he fondly hopes to knock out both France and- Britain. to say nothing of Italy. * * * * Wilson is in grim earnest about America's share in the war. He means to fight to a finish, a real finish. He will have no base compromises such as the Marquis of L'ansdowne apparently favours. He is out to smash the Hohenzollern dynasty and Prussian militarism, and nothing short of that will satisfy, him. His message to the King of Roumania is specially creditable to him. One of the most- immediately disastrous results of the Russian debacle is the special danger to Roumania. Mr. Wilson recognises this, and has cabled the King of Roumania assuring him of American support, now,' at the peace table, and after the war. By this time the world has come to see that Mr. Wilson is a man of his word. The liberties of the smaller nations, the liberties of Belgium, Serbia, and Roumania will never be finally extinguished if America, can save them. And, by the end of next year, we firmly believe that America will have done great things to secure their salvation from Austro-German tyranny.
