Sir John Jellicoe and Sir David Beatty-both started on the bottom rung of'" the ladder with no pull and no social advantage to give them a leg tip. Jellicoe married the daughter of the millionaire shipowner, Sir Chas. Cayzer (lately dead), and Beatty married the daughter of Marshal Field, one of Uncle Sam's biggest 'shopkeepers. Jellicoe is of humble birth—his father was a captain in the mercantile marine—and,"he, like Beatty, got where he is entirely by his own exertions— and by merit.
