DARING BURGLARY.

Ox Saturday night last, five “ navvies” broke into the Bush Hotel, nt Riverhead, kept by a settler named Stevenson, during his absence in Auckland. The only persons in the house were Mrs. Stevenson, and servant girl. The burglars effected an entrance into the bar, and helped themselves freely to the various drinks, and caused considerable disturbance. The two defenceless women were greatly alarmed. Mrs. Stevenson was knocked down three times. They endeavoured to commit an indecent assault upon (he servant maid, who stonily resisted, and succeeded in getting out of the house. One of the dastardly fellows seized a knife, and ran after her, but she took refuge in the ti-iroc scrub. She. at once recognized the ruffian when she next saw him. Information of the wanton outrage wasßrought to Auckland on Sunday morning, when Ser-geant-major Molloy and the water police proceeded in their boat to Riverhead, where they arrived on Sunday evening. From the description given of the fellows, the police, after having been searching during the night, proceeded to Mr. Lamb’s mill, Riverhcad, where they apprehended four men on the charge, who wore afterwards identified. They had been engaged in constructing a dam at the mill. When arrested, they were under the influence of drink. There were some spoons, knives, forks, and other articles stolen from the hotel, part of which has been recovered. 'Die four men, whose names are John McGill, James Croker, Hugh McAllister, and Colin Macpbcrson, were brought info Auckland on Monday, and lodged in the lock-up. Their speedy capture is highly creditable to Sergeant-major Molloy and those who accompanied him.
