INQEST ON THE BODY.

At 12 o’clock, Dr. Goldsbro’, the newly-appointed Coroner for the Hospital and Gaol, assembled a jury at the Stockade ; and, the body having been viewed, the following evidence was taken : Josep Tuckwell deposed : I am governor of Mount Eden Gaol. I have seen the body of James Stack, now lying in the gaol yard. 1 received Stack into my custody on Friday, the 9th of March, under sentence of death, from the Supreme Court, Auckland. I was present at his execution this morning at seven o’clock. The body was allowed to hang the usual time, and was taken down and placed in the coffin, as seen by the jury. Thomas Moore Pbilson, M.D., deposed : I am Provincial Surgeon and medical attendant tit Mount Eden Gaol. I was presoii tat the execution of James Stack this morning tit seven o’clock. I examined the body alter it was let down, and found life to bo extinct The body in the yard is the same body. Henry Colin Balncavis, deposed ; I am Sheriff of (he Province of Auckland. I produce the Governor’s warrant, in which he states, “ I see no reason to interfere to prevent the law from taking its course in respect to the said James Stack.” The warrant is signed by his Excellency Sir George Grey, and countersigned by the lion. E. W. Stafford. The document was received by me at four o’clock, p.m , on the 4tli of April, and under the Supreme Court Act, clause 8, I appointed the execution to take place tliis morning. 1 was present when the execution took place this morning at seven o’clock. The jury returned the following verdict : “ That James Stack was hanged by the neck until ho was dead this morning, the 7th day of April, 186G, within the precincts of the gaol, in conformity with the sentence passed upon him hy his Honour the Chief Justice of Now Zealand, on the 9th day of March, 1860. Tint wo have seen his dead body now lying in the prison yard.”
