THE LATE FIRE IN VICTORIASTREET.
The inquest touching this fire, adjourned from Tuesday last, was resumed on Thursday at one o'clock, at the " Cottage of Content," Victoria-street, when all the jurymen and witnesses were in attendance. Mr. Wynn,Mr.Beveridge, and Mr. Hughes appeared on behalf of the New Zealand and Auckland Insurance Companies, and Mr. Weston for Mr. Freedman, in whose premises the (ire originated. The inquiry lasted till a very late hour, when the jury returned the following verdict: —"That, from the evidence laid before them, the jury are of opinion that the origin of the fire which broke out in the premises of Morris Freedman, Victoria-street, on the morning of Friday, the 30th March ult., was not accident a), and that such strong suspicion rests on the said Morris Freedman, as being concerned in raising such fire, as to warrant the Court in referring the whole proceedings of the case to the Resident Magistrate for further investigation." Sargeant (/lark was then directed to look after Mr. Freedman, and he will be brought before the Resident Magistrate this (Saturday) morning.
