ASSEMBLAGE OF NATIVES AT TAURANGA.

By the arrival of the 1 Ladybird ’ on Monday at midnight, we are informed that a large assemblage of natives—about 900 in number—took place on Monday morning at Tauranga, in expectancy of meeting his Excellency the Governor, for the purpose of a conference being held relative to the disputed land. The natives appeared greatly disappointed on being informed that his Excellency was not present to meet them.

Wo have six clays’ later news, per ‘Quickstep’ in the Alatmkau, from tlio Grey lliver ; ami seven clays’ later from Napier, per cutter 1 Betsy,’ now in harbour. An investigation into the circumstances attending the late fire in Baker-street took place Monday afternoon, before T. M. Philson, Esq.,'M.D., coroner, and a respectable jury, at the house of Mrs. Bond, the Criterion Hotel, Ilobson-strcet. Mr. W. Waddell was chosen foreman, and the jury having viewed the scene of the destructive conflagration, several witnesses were examined. Mr. A. Beveridge appeared to watch the proceedings on behalf of the Now Zealand Insurance Company. The jury returned the following verdict: That the fire which occured in an unoccupied house in Baker-street, the property of Mr. J. E. Gilbert, on the 17th March instant, bears strong marks of having been caused by wilful incendiarism ; but by what person or persons such incendiarism was perpetrated there is no evidence to show."
