VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE.

A meeting of persons interested in tlie formation of a Volunteer Fire Brigade was held on Thursday evening at Mr, Isaacs’ store, Fort-street. There was a large attendance, and a list was brought forward to which some 40 young men had signed their names.

Mr. A. A*her was voted to the chair, and in opening the business, read a letter he had received from Major Tighe, Commanding Militia and Volunteers, to the effect that if it was his intention to again form another fire brigade, it was to be done at once, as the Militia and Volunteers would be called out next month for drill, &c. He (Major Tighe) strongly intimated the advisability, if possible, of forming an efficient brigade, as most beneficial to the public, more especially as fires wore of so frequent occurrence in Auckland of late. Mr. Asher then called upon those present to at once come forward and give in their names ns members of the bi ■igade. lie had called the present meeting for the purpose of forming a volunteer corps, in pursuance of the terms just read in Major Tighe’s letter, and he hoped they would not be found wanting.

The names in the list were then called over and accepted. Mr. A. Asher was proposed and duly elected as Superintendent of the Fire Brigade. Mr. Butter was proposed as Captain, and Mr. Guilding as Foreman of the Northern Engine. Mr. E. Lewis was appointed as Captain, and Mr. William Hart as Foreman of No. 2 Engine. Mr. Measures was elected Captain, and Mr. Geo. Cummings Foreman of No. 3 Engine. A discussion then arose upon the subject of pa}', clothing, &c , when the Chairman stated that the brigade would have to find their own clothes, &e., for the time being, but that the Insurance Companies had agreed to support them all in their power. No pay was allowed, and every man connected with the brigade would have to work at the engine ß . A resolution was then moved and carried, to the effect that no person should interfere or work with the brigade without special authority, excepting members belonging thereto, and that no member take any order from any person except an officer of the company. After some further discussion respecting the supply of water, condition of the hose, &c., a vote of thanks was passed to the chairman, and the meeting separated. The brigade meet for practice at G a.m. on Monday next, at the Northern Engine House.
