A meeting of persons qualified to vote in the formation ot a board of trustees for the district of Waitakeri East was held yesterday afternoon at the Wheatsheaf Inn, Queen-street. There were present Messrs. White, George, Wasley, Bassett, Ansell, Rossie, Hardy, Euston, and several others.

The object of tho meeting was the levying a rate, electing trustees, and traisacting pother business connected with the above district. Mr. F. White was elected chair nan.

The Chairman explained that the meeting was called iu accordance with the provisions of the Act passed by the Council. He also stated that he had been appointed by the Superintendent to receive claims for voting, and read the notice in the Gazette relative thereto.

Mr. Bethell then read the report of Jthe committee appointed at a meeting held on the passing of tho Act.

[The report, which is of considerable length, was not placed in our hands until too late an hour last night to appear in its place. It will appear in our next,] The Chairman then read the list of perpersons entitled to vote, and in reply to a landowner present, explained that he c.oild not take part in the business of the meeting, although there was* no objection to his being present. The Treasurer, Mr. (tEorge, next laid upon the table a Balance Shjet of receipts and expenditure. He sai I it was necessary that tw) auditors should be appointed to examine them. One or two gentlemen present were desirous before layi.ig a rate that the question of a road should be considered.

The Chairman said it was necessary to Ly a rate in the first instance ; the formation of roads rested with the Trustees who would be appointed, and it was for them to say how much of the amount levied should be collected. Were they to open a discussion as to tho roads he could not see where it would end.

Mr. Bethell proposed that the rate of one shilling an acre be levied.

Mr. S. Harding seconded the proposition

Mr. Waslkt proposed as an amendment, " That a rate of sixpence an acre be levie 1 for the roads in this boundary, and a threepenny rate for the road necessary to be formed outside the district embracing about

three miles." Thajr could not, he sail, appropriate avy portion of the shilling rate to any road out of the district.

The. Chairm >x declined putting aiy a.-nin l;nent beyon 1 o:ia proposing the levying of a race ; it was beside riio regular business of the meeting.

After so ne discussion, the amait Iment was secluded by Mr. Kosiß and put to the meeting, " Tii.it a rate of sixpence an acre be levied." There was a large uaaj _>rity i;i favor of the original proposition. The following were than nominated as Trustees : Mr. Botheil, (10 votes). Mr. Waite, (13), .Mr.Easiun, (9). Ansel!, (11), and Mr. Eaton, (10). The CiiAis.itan said be lamented that the raec.tli.; had n)t nominated Mr, T. George as one of the Trustees. He could no; have gone through the business withort his assistance. They ha 1 been at a amount of trouble, and as he had not been nominated, he should decline to stand.

It was suggested that a Secretary and Trcaurer would have to be appointed. The Chairman said it appeared to him that if they appoint:d a paid Secretary an.l Treasurer, the funds would materially suffer. It was for that reason ihey had done tlie work gratuitously. Mr. Geohge said he would not, under any c nsideration be a paid oiicer, and although it was proposed and seconded that he should be a Trustee in place of one elected, ho positive!;.- refused to serve. He promised, however, that what assistance he could reuder at any meeting he woul I willingly afford. The Chaik.man t also insisted upon withdrawing. Mr. Harding was elecrcd in his stead. Messrs. ivnapp and Rosie were appointed! Auditors, and after a vote of thanks to the chairman, the meeting separated.
