The protracted absence of the Governor, " and the total dearth of intelligence respecting t\)e progress of events in Cooks' Straits has excited considerable anxiety. Rumours have been afloat, calculated to increase the apprehension entertained by th.c public for the safety of the settlers in ithe Southern district but we do, not deem., them worthy of repetition, muct less of credit, as we have been unable to trace , them to any authentic soun c. Nevertheless, we look for definite information of the present state of the war with much 1 impatience ; especially as it is possible that some new disaster may- have rendered it imperative upon His Excellency to prolong 'his stay. Her Majesty's Ship Castor, got under weigh on Thursday morning to proceed to Wellington. It is said that she carries important despatches, from England : but if this were not the case, we- think that Captain Grahame has rightly judged it probable that his presence at Wellington, at this juncture, would be serviceable. ' ' We are glad to -have it in our power to state, that the military force at Wellington has been reinforced by detachments from the, 65th and 58th Regiments, numbering 177 men, exclusive of officers, who embarked on board the Levant, at Sydney, direct for Wellington. T^is may tend to strengthen, in some small degreey the confidence of the distressed settlers ;• but such addition to the troops already stationed there, would, in reality, be no protection against a general combination! of the natives, if such an event should take place. Wellington could not be, defended against a general invasion, but Iby an army.
