APPEALS AGAINST ASSESSMENTS, LENGTHY HEARING PROBABLE.

(Per Press Association.) v TAUJTABUNUr, September 10. The Assessment Court sat to-day to hoar about 150 objections to the borough valuations. ■ Mr Rawson, S.M., was chairman, Mr Campbell Government assessor, and Mr J. Slattcry borough assessor. Mr Mays (solicitor) represented the Land Board, and also the Valuer-General on law points; Messrs Strang and Shortland appeared fcr the objectors, while Mr Phillips watched the proceedings on behalf of Otorohanga town. Mr Coutts, valuer, deposed that he made the valuations on the basis of rents-ami sales of property. A Grosvenor.. property (owner, Mr W. Thomas) was taken as a typical ease, the capital value of which was raised from £3OOO- odd to £8432, The owner objected to the amount of the unimproved value, The case was argued all day and until late.to-night, without a decision being reached. AUCKLAND, September 10. In the Taumarunui Assessment Court the decision of the Court in a lest easewas a reduction of 10 per cent, on the unimproved value, The objectors declined to accept this as a general decision, and all cases will be fought on their merits,
