FRENCH RED CROSS.

APPEAL IN NORTH, OTAGO,

An appeal is being made this month for money for the purchase of blankets and cardigan jackets for the French Red Cross, The strain that has been put upon the French nation during the past three years must evoke sympathy from all. Added to the wastage of war, France has had to bear the occupation of a large area of her most thickly populated industrial districts; her industries have been lost to her, property ruthlessly destroyed, and those ,of the inhabitants who have escaped from the remorseless bondage of the Hun, old and young, women and children, arc homeless wanderers to be housed, clothed, and fed before they can again become useful citizens, Can with all the abundance and the blessings we enjoy, refuso our mite of assistance?

The following extract from a letter dated January 26,1917, from the French Wounded Emergency Fund, speaks for itself: "Our delegates send us appeals for certain things from each hospital they visit, and we fill these as nearly is possible, so that there is no chance of unnecessary garments being sent to one. hospital which could benefit another to a much greater extent. By these means we supply the needs in an economical and trustworthy manner, At present; ive have many appeals from hospitals for tubercular patients, of which there are now 450,000 amongst ex-soldiers in France, and also from hospitals in the colder districts, where with coal at £lO a ton it is almost impossible for the hospital authorities to obtain fuel; .therefore our warm clothing, blankets, etc., are more in demand than ever, and are doubtless saving much suffering, if not many lives. Blanket and Cardigan Fund,. Tho North Otago Red Cross Society have made arrangements for a supply of blankets and cardigans of the-best New Zealand materials. One pound will purchase a pair of blankets and 8s a cardigan. The followiug donations are | acknowledged:— .. ,
