DEPARTING SOLDIERS.

FAREWELL SOCIAL AT KAKANUI.

_ A very enjoyable function was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, on Thursday evening jast, when the Departing Soldiers' Farewell'. Commit tee tendered a social to Private Godfrey Bariiett. The fii'st part of the oVdiiing was spont with cards and gaiijes, after which a splendid supper was: provided by the ladies, Mr J, W, Minty then took the chair, and after'tho audience had sung a verse of the National Anthem, spoke of . tho sterling qualities of tho guest and stated that he felt sure that Private Barnott would worthily uphold the reputation of "our boys" at the front.

Two hours or more were then spent in song, toast, and harmony, the efforts of the performers being greatly appreciated.

Mr 11. Aldington, in a fitting speech, presented Private Barnett with a wristlet wateh, and eoiiciuded by wishing liiin eVery suci'oss, the best of good luck, aiul itt safe j'eturn to Kakanui, Private* Barnott responded, amid cheers, after which "He's a jolly Good Fellow" ;%as enthusiastically sung by vhc audience,

t Dancing wns then indulged in, to music supplied by Mr J, Brown, Mr Love acting aa 51, C, After Mr Eddington, on behalf of the committee, had thanked the ladies for providing supper, Mr >J, Brown for supplying music, and all who had contributed to the, success, of the function, a very enjoyable evening was brought tp a close,
