SOUTH SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting ol" the South School Commit!ec was held on Monday evening. The chairman (Mr T, Hunter) presided and there were also present: Messrs W. Lavender, T. Kidd, J. T. Calder, R. Malum, T. McQuin, J, McNarry, J, Bee, and E, C. Main (secretary),

The headmaster's report stated that the average attendance for the four weeks had been equal io' 05 per cent, ot the roll number. The teaching staff was busy with the preparation of the scholars/ items to be given at the school concert ,on Friday night, The report also stated that arrangements for billeting the members of the Albany street School Band, who were to give part of the programme at the concert, were practically completed, The headmaster stated that lie considered that in the

interests of the health of the children, and particularly of those who were obliged to bring their lunch to school, a number oi seats should be provided in the school playground. Referring to the "bottle collecting scheme" the report stated that in the space of eight or nine days a total of over 9000 bottles had been received and stored at the school, and it was suggested the schemo should be discontinued about the 22nd September, The report also referred jo the visit of the organiser of the National Service League, and stated that a number of the league's badges had been received and would .bo distributed to every scholar who contributed the membership fee of one shilling. sidered satisfactory in all departments and it was resolved lo convoy to tliu headmaster and teaching stall' the committee 's congratulations on the results of the examination, and also its'appreciation oi the work of the teachers during llio year.

, Miss C. Copland forwarded her resignation as fourth assistant- mistress, on account of having accepted a position on the staff of the Wiiitaki Boys' High School. The resignation was accepted with regret, ami the committee placed on record its appreciation of the six years' service -Miss Copland had rendered as ut member of the staff, and expressed,its good wishes towards her in her new appointment.

The visiting committee reported everything in connecetiou with the school premises to lie be in good order, and drew attention lo the inspector's comment on the cleanliness of llio school generally. It was resolved lo close the school for holidays on the Nth September and to re-open on the L'Hh inst. -Messrs .1, McNarry ami W. Lavender were appointed a visiting committee for the current month, •' Accounts amounting to &!1 0/8 were passed for payment, and the meeting concluded with a vote nf thanks lo the chairman.
