DEATH OF A TRIBAL CHIEF. (Per Press Association.) WHAKATANE, August 29. Humia Kereru, paramount chief of the Tuhoe tribe, died last Saturday. He was the last of the olfl-timc Maoris, and was able to trace his descent, to the. arrival of the first canoes. Kereru had, given 1000 acres of land to the War Fund, and enthusiastically encouraged recruiting. Natives are coming from all parts of both islands to attend the tangi.
