Oamaru Borough Council

The fortnightly meeting of the Oamarr. Borougli Council was held last night. Prcsent-His Worship tlie Mayor [Mr B. Million), Councillors Paterson, Brown, Miller, Frith, Mitchell, ' Keys M'Adam, Ycnior, Ckrke nnd.Mahan. Leave ut absence was granted to Councillor Senrlo. Mr Tncs. Cunnhvjliani reported that during August 93 cattle, 1150 sheep and, lambs, 5 pigs and t tall were slaughtered in the municipal abattoirs, of which one sheep was ccndcmrcd us unfit for human consumption.—Received. Serjeant Stagpoolc wrote stating that in the matter of tampering with the street lamps the offender had been brought Itefore the S.M., who hail dismissed the charge, holding tiiat no offence had been committed.—Referred to the By-Laws Committee. Mrs A . J. Burnett, Peebles, wrote that owing to the Council refusing to keep the in riipadr, she should have to refuse permission to cart material through her property—Referred to the Waterworks Committee with power to Act. Mr P. Frascr, race inspector, in reply to an inquiry if there would be a sufficient supply of filtered water available during the cooling summer, stated tiiat last year there was a shortage of about 1000 gallons per minute from December to March, and to remedy this he recommended the construction of a filter 'dam along the north side of the main filter channel, 13 chains long-Uy 12 yards wide and 18 inches deep, which would give a filtering area of 3422 square yards by 29, ecfual to 995 gallons per minute. The filtered water would percolate into the adjoining channel, and the cost would lie some £42 18s.

Cr. Brown said that last year the Council did not see its way to comply with the proposal; and in consequence they got a lot of impure water. He thought they should now comply with the request,

Burns drew the attention of the Council to the insanitary state of the gutter in Isis street, near its intersection with Till street, On two occasions members of his family had suffered illness which had tieen traceable .'to the impurities arising from the drain, ami Dr Whitton, after an inspection, had unhesitatingly described the drain as a "filthy disgrace to the town." He hoped the Council would give the matter immediate attention. Mr Jas. S, B. Anderson also- complained of a similar nuisance—Referred to the Works' Committee for report.

Mr Ales. Riach, on behalf of the Taieri -and Peninsula Milk Supply Co. (Ltd.), applied for-a supply of metal for the factory'yard. -Dealt with in the Works Committee's report. Mr John Moore, Thames street, applied for a water service for section 1, 'block ,7, Eden street.—Referred to the Waterworks Committee, wit!' power to act.

Mr A. ' Direen applied for a domestic water supply for his property in South Oamaru from the water troiigt now on his property. —Dealt with in Waterworks Committee's report. The District. Engineer for Railways irtimated that permission had been granted to lay an Bin gas main across the railway line at the foot of Wear street, the work on the i ailway to he carried out under the supervision of his own men, amicost of such supervision to be paid by the Council-Received.

The Town Hall Committee reported recommending : (1) That an opening in the partition at the back of the dress circle be made, and three seats removed, to allow the cinematograph to be removed from the passage way. (2)That instructions have been given for the connection of a gas stove in one of the ladies' dressing rooms. (3) That the fence at the rear of the Opera House be removed further back to increase the size of the yard. (4) That linoleum be laid in one of the ladies' dressing rooms.-The report was adopted. The Works and Reserves Committee reported: (.1) That permission was granted to the Harrison Band to play in-the gardens on Sunday, 28th. inst. (2) That it was resolved to supply the T. and P. Milk Co. ■with 25 or 30 yards of metal as soon as available. (3) The Engineer has been instructed to give attention to the footpath on the south side of Upper Nen street. (4) Recommending that the ditch running through section 4, 'Hock 77, be cleaned out and that the Engineer, be requested to report on the condition of -the footpath in Greta street, fronting sections 4 and 5, block 74. (5) Recommending that the owners in block G, through which the drain runs connecting with the Eden street sewer, be notified to have the drain put in proper order to the satisfaction of the Sanitary Inspector, (6) That the Sanitary Inspector has been asked for a writton DX{lanatio: in regard to Iris report of irregularities in the nightsoil service..

Cr, Frith moved that an addition be made to paragraph s—"That5 —"That in the alternative'the Council offer to pipe the drain if the owners of property agree to pay half cost of the work.'j ■

Cr./M'Adam [seconded,' and with this addition the whole report was adopted. The Finance Committee recommended accounts amounting to £2?O % id be passed for payment.—Adopted. The Waterworks Committee reported as follows:: (1) Recommending that the extra filteririg bed suggested by Mr Fraser be carried out; (2) recommending that A. Direen's application for a domestic supply he granted at £5 per annum.—Adopted, Applications for trough supplies at Waiareka were granted to Mr de Lambert and Mr John Ireland, also to Mr Alex. Douglas, at Eveline. Permission was granted for tho erection of the following new buildings :" Additions te buildings,, on section 1, block 7, Thames and Eden streets, for Mr John Moore; additions to house of wood and stone, Kibble street, for Mr Tbos.
