FOOTBALL NOTES.

.... *m (By Fitz). Despite the inclement -weather last Thursday, the match between the Excelsior first and a combined team from the Maheno and Kakanui Clubs was played on the North < Road ground, when a fair number of enthusiasts of football watched the game. Passing was entirely oub of the question, the a>reasy nature of the

ball being againsb it, and the game was mostly a forward one. The country team's forwards being much heavier than their opponents, won the game for them, although the local men mado a stubborn defence, and the play was very even. The scores were : Combined team, 9 points ; Excelsior, 6 points. Mr J. Toohey gave satisfaction with the whistle. After the game the country team were entertained m the Royal Hotel by their opponents. At a meeting of the committees of the Oamaru and Athletic Clubs, held last Wednesday evening, correspondence was read from the secretary to the South Canterbury Union re their annual match with North Otago, After discussion it was decided to play tho match at Timaru on Thursday, 23rd July. Messrs R. Hewat, Jno. M'Laren, and R. Thomson were chosen as a selection committee, and Mr W. Veitch was elected hon. secretary. The secretary was instructed to write to the Otago Union to arrange, if possible, for tho match with that union to be played on the 27th August instead of the 26th, the latter date being most inconvenient. This week's match is the second of the senior contests, and I expect to see a capital game played on Thursday. The game will tako the form of a test match, besides being also a local fixture ; and so the players will have to pub their best "foot" forward with a view to being selected by the committee, It is to be hoped that if any of the team chosen are unable to get away to Timaru they will notify the committee at once, with a view to their places being filled by. the next best mon. The following are the teams for tomorrow's match : Athletic ; Robertson, Booth, D. Bee, D'M'Ghie, C. Bee, Barr, M'Culloch, Connelly (captain), M'Elhenny, Veitch, Jardine, Rodgers, F. Hastie, G. Hastie, D. Burns. Oamaru : M'Oulloch, Johnstone, Robson, Crawshaw, M'Ghie, Ferons, Toohey, King, Rapson, M'Pherson, M'Callum, Keddell, Hedley, Bruce, D. De Foe (captain).
