The Anglican Diocesan Synod was opened to-day, when Bishop Cowie delivered the usual inaugural address. Ho urged tho dpsirablenes* of Christian unity, •peaking of the history of the Episcopate as that order of bishops which the Church of Irel.md has received from the Church of England, and which England received with the Gospel from tho Churches of Asia Minor and Italy. He went on to say that though organic union might nt present be impracticable between Christians possessing the historic episcopate and those for whatever reason held themselves aloof from that order, tho measure of unity that remained for them mutually to cherish is great. After the address the members of the Synod presented Bishop Cowie with a pastoral staff in recognition of his having completed the twenty-first ye*r of his Episcopate. The stuff had an inscription in Latin, lcfirding tlut it is presented to Bishcp Cowie for use by himself and his successors.
