TIMARU. October 19.
A start, was made by the Harbor En* gineor this morning with the experiment of hhiftintf the shingle accumulation at the Breakwater. The Priestman grab dredger lifis the shingle into the hopper, from which it is sluiced along a shoot under tho wharf into tho hopper of the punt dredge, which carries it awiiy while tho hopper is being refilled. Two hundred tons were got away, and when a few imporfeotioiiH have been remedied, thit apparatus will work more rapidly. The annual necuinulition averages 60,000 yards, pny, 200 tons per week.
