NORTH OTAGO MOUNTED RIFLES.
The week's training of the company concluded on Saturday afternoon, when sports were held. There was a good attendance, a number of ladies being present, who manifested a great deal of interest in the sports. In one event — the best looking trooper in the troop — they were the sole judges, and their award gate much satisfaction, as Trooper Mitchell was very popular wi-.h the troop. The officers of the troop expressed themselves as well pleased with the discipline and conduct of the troop, and the men spoke very highly of their officers, and also of Captain Colman, the inspecting officer. The last night in camp— Friday — was spent in a rery enjoyable manner. A number of guests were present, and a smoke concert was given in the mess room, when a capital programme of songs and recitations, etc., was given. A stump Bpeech was contributed by Sergeant Stringer, Sergeant Macdonald gave a recitation, iwd Captain Chaffey, Lieutenant Rice, Lieutenant Taylor, Mr Grummit, Ser-geant-Major Piper, Troopers Greenfield, Fea, Mitchell, Bnd Bandsmen Slater and Kodgers contributed songs. In ihe midst of a chorus a night alarm was raised. Firing was heard coining from the direction of the South School. The men were ordered to fall in in sections, were served with 10 rounds of ammunition each, were inarched off, extended into line, and had opened fire all within five minutes, the time being taken by Lieut.-Colonel Sumpter.
