PICNIC AT MAEREWHENUA.
(from otjk own cobresponbbnx. ) A "combined" picnic embracing the Livingstone, Maerewhenaa, and Duntroon schools, was held on the fiat at the Maerewhenua school on Boxing Day. The weather proved somewhat disagreeable owing to the strong northwester wkich was blowing across the flat. Some delay occurred in getting a start made with tTip g^mpp, and Ja sreat deal of time was ? s'el before anything was done. A considerable sum of money had been collected In the three districts, and was
irivoo as priz s for running;, jumping, c c Wull-wishers in Oamaru had also need very liberally in presenting prizes consisting of toys, haud-baga, alonma, and a variety of useful articles too numerous to mention, together with two tins of lollies First, second, and third prizes were given to the boya and girls In eaoh aehool who bad attended most regularly during the year, and also a first and second prza m the moat popular boys and girls in each aehool, The evening proved beautifully fine, and the most enjoyable part of tbe day waa towards sunsat, when the hlfh wind gave placa to a mild calm, and tbt* people seemed to enter into the spirit of ihe games more heartily, and with greater good feeling than thty had done in tbe earlier part of the day. A number of the young people remained and wound up the day with a very pleasant dance In tbe aohoolhonae.
