TIMARU.
October 10. At the Resident Magistrate's Court today, Thomas Collins, stationer, tobacconist, etc., was fined 5s and court costs for keeping his shop open on Sunday, September 27th. Hla counsel (Mr Hammersley) urged that the circumstances were exceptional, as Mr Collins' stock had been destroyed by water at the recent fire, and he was sustaining heavy loss. He had opened his Bhop to dry the stock, and had not refused to sell when asked. The Bench inflicted the mitigated penalty. October 11. The Timaru Agricultural Society at its meeting yesterday resolved to try and arrange for special trains from Christchurch and Oamaru.
