Tbe news from Samoa by the mail steamer is of an unimportant character. No further annexation troubla appears to have arisen since the previous information came to hand.

On Sunday evening the Public Hall at Matakana was burned down. All the road board books *nd documents wera lost in the fire. The origin ii unknown. Ths building was insured in the Imperial for Ll5O.

Kelly's supporters hare subscribed L 250 for the purpose of unseating Sheehan for alleged corrupt practices At the late Tauranga election.

Letters from Apia, dated May 20th, states that M' Arthur's schooner Oliver was there on Reef Facilnote. She is expected to be got off. She is insured in the South British for LIOOO, and hep original cargo for LI2OO, two-thirds of which is reinsured.

The insurances on the Victoria street fire were — Dare's premises, owned by Mrs Wallace, LSOO In the Northern j stock, L 250 ia tho Phoeaix, L 250 in the Equitable, L 350 in the Colonial ; Ball'a two shops, occupied by Brown and Mettam (seriously damaged), LSOO in the Royal. In the adjacent buildings occupied by Carry, bootmaker, the loss was Ll5O, insured in the Norwich Union ; Mettam, plumber, loss was L 75, insured in tho Norwich Union ; Sowers, tobacconist, Ll3O insured in the Norwich Union, part reinsured ; Glancy, jeweller, L 250, in the National ; stock and tools on the premises of Glancy and Somers, owned by R. Bartley, seriously damaged, L 350, in the Northern.
