GENERAL SUMMARY.
The aaitatiou in favor of offering Mr Lowell, late American Minister at the Court or St James, the Morton professorship at Oxford is gathering strength. Mr Lowell has signified his willingness to aecopr, if the offer is unanimous. The salary in 450001b per annum. A six days' walking matoh closed In London on May 2, at the Aquarium, amid a crowd of spectators. The contest had lost itH interest owing to the retirement of Littlewood on acer unt of illness. Aohille, the French long distance champion, completed only 193 miles. A youth (Onner) who made 337 miles, is considered the coming cl anpioo. The total scoresjoflt^e principal contestants were — Rowell, 430 ; Cartwright, 383 ; Maaon, 370.
In the House of Commons on the even, ing of May 5, the Conservative amendment to the English Registration of Voters Bill, providing that the cost of registry be charged to the Treasury in stead of to the looa! rateß, was rejected by a vote of 270 to 237. The result of the vote waß received with loud cheers by the Opposition. Sir S. Northcote asked Mr Gladstone whether in the face of the small majority he would further consider the question. Mr Gladstone said he would abide by the decision of the House.
The race for the One Thousand Guineas for three-year-old fillies, run on May 8 at Newmarket, being the first race of the Meeting, was won by the Duke of Westminister's Farewell. Sixteen started.
Mr LoweU unveiled the buat of Samuel Taylor Col«ridgo in Poeta' Corner, Westminster Abbey, in the presence of the whole Coleridge family, many noblemen, members of the Bouse, Bishops, and a large number of Americans. The bust was the gift of the late Rev. Dr Mercer, of Rhode Island. Mr Lowell paid an eloquent tribute to the poet's memory. Lord Coleridge returned thanks on behalf of the family.
