At the nomination of a member of the House of Representatives yesterday, Mr Acton Adams wu proposed by Mr Sclanders and seconded by Mr J. Gra- { ham, and Mr Albert Pitt was proposed by Mr Richmond, M.H.K., and seconded by Mr Cooksey. Both candidates spoke at length, and were severally questioned. Mr Adams, in his first address, had spoken against Mr Curtis' Bill and Catholic demands. Since then letters in the papers had charged him with going to Catholics last Sunday and canvassing for votes. He denied this, and* challenged tho authors to confront him. Afterwards Mr Cooksey said that he had a written statement, signed by a person named Condell, assorting that Mr Adams had canvassed him as alleged. Mr Cooksey could scarcely obtain a hearing. Feeling ran. high throughout the proceedings, which lasted fully threw hours. The show of hands resulted as follows : — Adams, 58 ; Pitt, 43. The poll takes place on Thursday.
