THE GLASGOW BANK. (To the Editor of the North Otago Times.)

Sir, — In to-day's issue of your paper you insert a clipping from '•" Atlas," in the World, regarding the character of the directors of the City of Glasgow Bank. He states, as a fact, that one vf the directors most sternly refused to read a Monday's newspaper, because it had to be printed on the Sabbath day. Whether this be true or not, it does not warrant him, or any other, in publishing it, to slander, at the same time, a largo body of men who have nothing to do with the Bank transactions. He accuses Scotch elders of devouring widows' houses without compunction, and otherwise misrepresents the religion of Scotchmen. The failure of the City of Glasgow Bank is indeed a national calamity, and Sootohraen all the world over feel it to be so, and are coming forward with great liberality to render assistance to those who have been plunged into poverty and misery. The thousands of pounds that have been al^ ready subscribed towards this benevole^*^ object, rebut the slander of " Atlas " that Scotchmen raise the Fourth Comimndment into the greatest of all, and in too many oases, make it the substitute for all. I protest against such misrepresentations by whomsoever published. I am, <feo., A. Scotchman. January 6, 1879.
