NORTH OTAGO BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.

The usual monthly meeting of the Committee of the Society was held at the Secretary's office last night. Present — Messrs Falconer (President, m the chair), Stewaid, Gibbs, Milligau, C. S. Allen,

Collis, Mollison, Otterson, Paterson, and Greenfield. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence read and approved. The Secretary was instructed to write to Mr Speight, thanking him for his gift of a barrel of beer in aid of the Society's funds. The Secretary wm also instructed to apply to the District Land Registrar for tho issue of title* to the Society's endowment. • An application from Mr G. Jones, asking that the monthly subscription-lists be advertised in the Evening Mail, was acceded io. Mr Hesketh's report was read, as follows :—: — s' N. 0. Benevolent Institution, Dec. 31, 1878. The Committee N. O. B. Institution. Gentlemen, — I have the honor to forward the following report for the month of December -.—There are four children remaining in the institution from last month. Two newly-arrived families needing relief were also admitted into the institution, and have since found employment. Eight domestic servants have been received into the Servant's Home, all of whom obtained immediate employment. The demand for domestic servants daring the month has much increased. Fourty-eigbt Government immigrants have been received into the depdt daring the month, all of whom have obtained employment. I have inspected the society's cottages and found them in a fair state of repair. Herewith I forward abstract ration returns for the month of December. — I have, etc., Alfred Heskkth. The Visiting Committee's report for the month, dealing with 26 cases of distress, was read and adopted. Mr Johnston sent in plans and specifications for the erection of a cottage for Mrs Black, and, on the motion of Mr Steward it was resolved that the Secretary be instructed to write to Mr Johnston, thanking him for drawing the plans, &c., without charge ; and it was further resolved that the action of the sub-com-mittee in the matter of the purchase of the land, upon which the cottage is to be erected, be approved, and that tenders for the building be called for. The Secretary was instructed to write to Mr D. H. Mervyn in reference to a long standing liability. The Vice-President and Treasurer were appointed a sub-committee to wait on Messrs Hislop and Creagh, honorary solicitors to the Society, in reference to the conveyance of section 3, block 77, and investment of a portion of the Baird Fund. Mr Allen, on behalf of the Printing Committee, reported that the printing of the report, balance-sheet, and Incorporation Act, had been tendered for at L 7 10s per 500 copies, by both printing office's, and it was, after discussion, resolved that the tender of Mr G. Jones be accepted, on the^round, as suggested by Mr AUeu, that Mr Jones, nofc having made anything out of a similar contract the previous year, it would be as well to give him this. Mr Greenfield moved, Mr Gibbs seconded, and it was carried — That any member of Committee not arriving within 30 minutes of the time of meeting, shall not have his name inserted in the minutes of suoh meeting. Accounts amounting to LlO4 19s 4d were passed for payment, subject to the approval of the Visiting Committee. A Sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Steward, Collis, and Gibbs, together with the president, vice-president, and secretary, was appointed, to bring up a report at next meeting, making a recommendation as as to the best mode of dealing with the Society's endowments. The meeting then, after the customary vote of thanks to the Chairman, terminated.
