FIRST DAY.

Quoiting. — Ist prize, L 3 ; 2nd, L 2; 3rd, LI. T. Little, 1 ; R. Lindsay, L 2; A. Cooke, 3. Heavy Hammer (no swinging).— lot prize, L 3 ; 2nd, LI 10s ; 3rd, 15s. There were for this event four competitors, all good men, and well matched. Steve Smith was, however, not to be beaten, taking the first prize with a fine throw of 80ft. 9£in. ; D. Chalmers 78ft. 3in., 2; J. Shaw, 71ft. l^in., 3; W. Ross, 4. 220 yds. Handicap Race.— lst prize, L 2 10s ; 2nd, LI 10s ; 3rd, 15s. There were eight competitors for this race, which was run in heats, and was, perhaps, one of the most interesting events of the day. In the first heat there faced the starter (Mr P. Russell), W. Henderson, scratch; W. Craig, 2yds ; J. M 'Donald, 4yds ; and M. M'Quin, 7yds. M 'Donald quickly sprang to the front, and won a well-oontested race, with M'Quinn second. The second heat wai contested by the brothers A. and J. Dalgleisb, 13 and 11yds respectively, and the brothers S. and J. Fraser, 15 and 11yds. A. Dalgleish won somewhat easily, with S. Fraser second. In the deciding heat A. Dalgleish came in first, with M 'Donald second, and S. Fraser third. Putting Heavy Ball (no drawing). — Ist prize, L 3 ; 2nd, LI 10s j 3rd, 15s. For this five entered, D. Chalmers being the winner with 34ft 2in; J. Shaw, 2nd, 33ft Gin. Steve Smith, S. Fraser, and W. Robinson also competed. Hop, Step, and Jump. — Ist prize, L 3; 2nd, LI ; 3rd, 10s. For this there came forward no less than seven competitors, among whom were several well-known at the Society's games. After some considerable time spent in -deciding, J. Fraser succeeded in placing 39ft 10m between his heels and the scratch, a feat which none of the others could accomplish, and he therefore took first prize, W. Craig coming 2nd with 38f t 9in, and T. Telfer 3rd, with 38ft sin. Last year Telfer won with 43ft 2in. Bagpipe Music (Strathspeys and Reels, in Highland Costume). — Ist prize, L 3; 2nd, L 2 ; 3rd, JOs. For thu there was only one competitor, J. Steven, but Mr W. Sutherland, with his usual good nature, came forward to fill up the programme, and the assemblage was treated to some excellent music by that gentleman, and Mr Steven. Best Dressed Boy in Highland Costume. — Ist prize, LI 10s ; 2nd, LI ; 3rd, 10s. It was expected that this would have brought out a number of embryo Highlanders, but | only one put in an appearance — Master G. A. Sutherland, son of the worthy president, Mr D. Sutherland. The little fellow was dressed with exceeding good taste, in the tartan of his clan, and secured the first prize. Highland Reel (in costume). — Ist prize, L 3 ; 2nd, LI 10s ; 3rd, 15s. Four competed to the stirring strains of Mr W. Sutherland's pipes, and danced with much neatness and grace. It is needless to say that each had his admirers, but the judge 3, being bound to confer the honor on someone, awarded Ist prize to J. S. Murray (whose son won last year); 2nd, D. Buchanan ; 3rd, J. Watson. The other competitor was D. Cruickshank. Youths' Handicap Race, 220 yds (under 16 years). — Ist prize, LI 10s ; 2ud, 15s ; 3rd, 10s. As is usual in these events, a large number of boys competed — no less than 10— and some few of whom were, to say the least, fully 16 years old. The handicapping was, however, fairly done, and the whole were started veil. W. Harming came in Ist ; A. Peattie, 2nd ; and P. Shea, 3rd. Tossing the Caber. — Ist prize, L 2 10s ; 2nd, LI 10s; 3rd, 15s. Five entered, the old champion, Shaw, being the favorite. Nor did he decieve his friends, winning with a throw of 18ft. 4in. ; after the caber had been considerably shortened, however ; D. Chalmers second, 17ft. 2in. The caber had again to be shortened before Steve Smith, who was 3rd, could successfully toss it. Rosa and Hall were the other competitor!. Claxton won last year with 17ft. Bin, Shaw being second with 17ft. 2in. Mile Walking Match.— lst prize, L 3; 2nd, LI ; 3rd, 15s. There were entered for this — T. Clark (scratch), Paisley (scratch), Fraser (10yds), Adams (30yds), P. Gray (40yds), M'Fadgeon (40yds), and D. Church (50yds). The last named led off in good style, but soon showed signs of being distressed and allowed the rest to pass him one by one. M'Fadgeon entered evidently without any just conception of what constitutes walking — matchwalking at all events, and although his stride might do well enough behind a plough it had no show against practised pedestrians. Adams walked well for a long time, and had the distance been a little leu would, doubtless, have won. Clark, who started at scratch, was however far too good for his company, and soon began to stride through the lot, coming to the front before the threequarters had been passed, and winning with any amount to spare, as fresh as a lark. Fraser second and Adams third. On passing the ppst Clark was loudly cheered, and in order to show how little the exertion had affected him started at a smart run for the tent. Highland Fling (in costume). — Ist prize, L 3; 2nd, LI 10s ; 3rd, 15s. Four entries. Won by James Murray. Watson 2nd, and Buchanan 3rd. P. Caldtr was the other contestant. The winner (Black) succeded in making the best jump ever cleared on the ground, showing 9ft Sin ; Fraser, 2nd, 9ft 2m ; Telfer, 3rd, Bft llin. Wrestling (Cumberland Style).- Ist prize, L 3; 2nd, LI 10s; 3rd, 15*. Eight competed. In the first round J. Lane threw Stewart, T. Telfer threw OBrien, R. Fleming threw Robertson, and M'Donough threw Goodall. In the second round Teller threw M'Donough, and Lane threw Fleming. Telfer then in the third round threw Lane and won, Lane taking 2nd prize. 440 yds Flat Race (Handicap).— Ist prize, L 3; 2nd, LI 10s ; 3rd, 15s. Three entered --A. Dalgleish, syds; J. M'Donald, 7yds; and J, Dalgleish, 15yds. J. Dalgleish led off and maintained the advantage given him by the handicappers until about 50yds from home, when M'Donald put on a splendid spurt, and won by about a yard ; A. Dalgleish close up. Sword Dance (in costume). — Ist prize, L 3; 2nd, LI 10s ; 3rd, 15s. Four entered. Some good dancing was displayed, Murray securing first pnze, Buchanan 2nd, and Calder 3rd.

Boys' Vaulting (under 16yrs).—1st prize LI 10s; 2nd, LI ; 3rd, 10s. Five entered for this event, and some very coed jumping resulted, Ogilvie winning, with Richardson second. The 3rd prize was divided between C. Headland, Frame (Otepopo), and Hook. Standing High Jump.—lit prize, L 2; 2nd," LI; 3rd, 10*. There was nothing worth mentioning in the jumping, Telferana Black tieing at the insignificant height of 4ft lin, and dividing the spoil. Only three competed. Iruh Jig. —lit prize, L 3; 2nd, LI lOi; 3rd, 15s. There were six competitors for this, which, ai last year, was won by a native of the Land o' Cakes, in competition with several «f the "boys" of the sister country. Half-mile Race (handicap). —lst prize, L 4; 2nd, LI 10s; 3rd, 15i. Henderson, Ist; M 'Donald, 2nd. This race had to be run over twice, owing to a mistake in the distance. Henderson came in first. In the second run A. Dalgliesh at once assumed the lead, followed oy Henderson, with J. Dalgliesh third, M'Donald fourth, and Malcolm last. This order was observed until the third lap, when Henderson took the lead, with the Drothera Dalgliesh second and third. After they had gone four times round the same mistake as to the distance was made by the brothers Dalgliesh, leaving Henderson (who still kept the lead) and M'Donald to finish first and second. Tilting.—lst prize, L 3; 2nd, L 2; 3rd, LI. Seven competed, but the event did not attract much attention. J\ Little succeeded in securing the largest number of rings, and won Ist prize, with M. Little 2nd, and J. Henderson 3rd.
