Common rumor states that Mr Haughton has been appointed to the 'control of the Defence Department. Messrs Stafford, Richmond, Domett, Fitzgerald, and Hector, hare been appointed a Commission to approve a design for the new Government House. Major Turner has refused the appointment to the command at the front, because the Government decline to make him a Lieutenant-Colonel. Mr Kichmond and Col. Jbl aultuin will accompany the Governor to Wauganui on the 9th prox. As at present arranged, the Governor will commence his Southern tour by visiting Nelson. Lady Bov/en will not accompany him, but will go to Auckland. Letters from Napier confir n the late telegrams to the effect that the despatches of Mr Deighton, R.M., and Captain Tuke were the result of a groundless panic. In the General Synod of New Zealand, now being held at Auckland, at the close of the debate on the report of the Committee in Dr Jenner's case, two amendments having been negatived, the following resolution, proposed by Archdeacon Harper, was carried : — " That whereas the General Synod is of opinion that it is better for the peace of the Church that Dr Jenner should not take charge of the Bishopric of Dunedin, the Synod hereby requests him to withdraw his claim to that position." There was a general holiday and a public demon* ■tration on the occasion of Bishop SSelwyn's departure. The late earthquake was felt at Auckland, and several shocks were also felt at the Thames. The steamer John Penn also felt it off Taranaki, it was thought she had struck on a rock.
