BOXING DAY SPORTS.
' Wednesday was kept • Tory general holiday in Oamaru ; a considerable number of the places of business closing at midday. The weather was most favorable for out-door sports, and a large crowd as* •embled on the Esplanade, as competitors and spectators. The most attractire of the sport* was as usual, " Tilting at the "Ringy^ot up by Mr Payne of the Star and Garter Hotel. Two Sweepstakes were contested and the result of the tilting wm as follows ; — in fire rounds of 4 rings each : —
Haylock and Schluter tied at 9. In tilting once round to decide, both tied again with * score of 3 ; but in the next, Haylock took 3 rings against Schleuter's 2, and won the stakes. The other sports were of minor importance. Sereral foot races for bojs were got up, and were well con* tested. Quoiting was also entered into with spirit. The race for a rilrer watch, adrertised by Mr Williams, did not come off, but a considerable amount of sport was furnished out of other amusements carried out under his direction. On the cricket ground, the cricketers enjoyed some good practice — but the ground was not iu first-class condition. In consequence of the recent ho»Ty rain it was rery " dead," putting both bowler and batsman at a decided disadrantage. It is to be hoped that it will be in better order for the match with the Dunedin Eleren which comes off to-day.
