Awanui Displays Little Interest in Fire Fighting
SPARSE ATTENDANCE AT MEETING CALLED Ther e were only about 14 present at a public meeting called in Awanui on Monday evening to discuss ways and means of raising finance for the raising and maintenance of firefighting equipment for the Awanui Fire District. It was pointed out that a “first aid equipment was required by the Fire Service Council, this being a 400 gallon tank mounted on a chassis with some lengths of hose, whereby a fire could be checked until the arrival of the more powerful equipment from Kaitaia. It has been disclosed that this will cost about £l5O per year to mantain, and it was decided by the Committee of the Fire District to seek co-opera-tion of Awanui residents in reaching a decision as to the way this money would be raised. That is, whether the amount should be charged on the rates, or whether there was some other way of raising the money. There had been no thought by the Committee, other than to discuss this matter with residents, and they had anticipated a large gathering. However, rather than settle the matter with th e few present, it was decided that another meeting should h e held on November 27th, at which it was hoped there would be a large and representative gathering for the purpose of discussion. Residents of Awanui and surrounding districts should note that a fire alarm siren has been installed in their district, and to keep this in order, it will be sounded at 8 p.m. promptly on every Thursday evening henceforth.
