Kaitaia W.I.

The November meeting opened with the President, Mrs. Bird, receiving many apologies owing to the weather. After the thought for the month and the Roll Call, arrangements for the Christmas Party on December sth were finalised. They were as follows: Each member to bring as many guests as she wished provided she brought a plate or plates of sandwiches or cakes, enough for herself and guests, preferably home-made cooking if possible. No shoulder sprays will be presented to guests this year. Business concluded, Mrs. Surman, delegate to the bi-annual meeting held at Oruru, gave a short talk on the Kaitaia Institute’s part of this meeting, and the general success of the whole day. Mrs. Bird thanked her on behalf of all members for her speech at th e bi-annual meeting, and her summary at this November meeting. Prior to afternoon tea served by Mesdames Goodhew, Thompson arid Hunger, Mrs. Bird read an article from “Home and Country,” followed by Mrs. S. Holder speaking on “Customs of Other Countries,” namely in this case “hairdressing.” Both talks wer e informative and interesting to all. Immediately after a game run by Mesdames Bird and Powell, the competition winners were announced as follows : Paper mache article Mrs. Batten ; Best bloom—Mrs. Rogers ; Jam roll—Mrs. Cade ; Tray of vegetables—Mrs. S. Holder. The afternoon closed with ail singing the National Anthem.

Larmers Road W.I. Undaunted by the wet weather, Larmers Road W.I. held their monthly meeting at Mrs. Surnmerfield’s residence on November 2nd. Mrs. Jameson presided and there was a good attendance. It was decided to support the Orphanage Appeal. Larmers Road members were unanimous in their support of paying off the Building Fund at 2/6 per member. Members were also in favour of the idea, re the School of Art and Design. Members agreed that the bi-annual meeting had been a day of days. Mrs. Arthur Werner, delegate for Larmers Road, had entered in the two-minute speech contest. Mrs. T. Matthews and Mrs. T. Bradford had acted in the “proposal” (yokel). Larmers Road came second in this, being one point behind the winning “couple.”

The roll call, “sing, say or pay,” brought forth a little of everything —including funds.

Mrs. Jameson then asked Mrs. A. Werner to give her speech so that members who were unable to go to Oruru could hear it. Mrs. Matthews and Mrs. Bradford acted their “proposal” too.

Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. O. Werner and Mrs. Pearce and Mrs. E. M. Matthews was social hostess. Mrs. B. Werner and Mrs. A. Werner were on the birthday list.

Competition results : Best bloom —Mesdames Pearce, A. Werner, E. M. Matthews, M. Werner, Wordley, Jameson, Summerfield and O. Werner all received full points ; Flowers arranged in a baking powder tin—Mesdames Jameson, T. Matthews, O. Werner, Wordley and R. A. Johnston all received full points. It was indeed Mrs. Jameson's lucky day. Not content with winning a lovely cup and

saucer, she also won the lucky number. Next meeting will be held at Mrs. Jameson’s residence, the first Thursday in December. The competition will be one dozen biscuits. These biscuits are to be donated -to the Hospital.
