Bowls

The Kaitaia Bowling Club’s competitions for 1 the Singles Open Championship, intermediate and junior, close on thfe 22nd inst., and the senior and jufiior Pairs tomorrow, 15th. Numerous nominations already recorded on the Club’s notice board promise to make these events even more popular than in the past. This is not surprising, for the Club membership is steadily increasing all the time, and is now past the 110 mark. * There was a\ revival of interest in the coveted Taaffe Shield, emblem of supremasy in lull rink play, last Saturday when a team skipped by H. N. Freeman, With D. Hanlon 3rd, C. Maria 2nd and R. Northwood lead, successfully challenged the holders, R. Lewis, J. Cowie (3rd), J. Crosby and L. Thompson (lead) to win after an even game by 17 to 15. While there is never any lack of challenges for the senior trophy, junior bowlers are reminded that there is also a trophy called the Tom-Tit Star, and last year’s holders, A. Carson (skip), D. Boreham, G. Stensness and H. Carr, are keep to prove that they are the rightful holders. * Bowlers will be pleased to know that Paul Bidmead made a visit to the greens during the week, and an. indication that he is regaining his health was his entry in the singles championship, and the “old firm,” Bidmead and Farrimond, are again bracketed in the pairs. * Beginner’s luck could hardly be better exemplified than in the success of two first year players, H. Anderson and K. Crene, when with R. Northwood and skip Ron Durney they won the first full rink tournament they had ever competed in, which was held recently. Anderson had never previously delivered a bowl while Crene had not played more than three %ames. Surely there is nothing impossible in bowls. On the merit side, of course, is the particularly fine form shown by Durney so far this season. It will be noted that he continued his successful run by defeating one of the scratch skips in the draw last Saturday. v . Methodist Sunday School Anniversary At 2 o’clock next Sunday afternoon - the Kaitaia Methodist Sunday School 1 will celebrate its anniversary with a • special service. Everyone is wel- ’ corned to the afternoon, which includes specially selected songs by the children, and the annual prize-giving ceremony, culminating with the ser- : vice of afternoon tea.
