BOWLS

Whangarei Visit The Executive Four’s Championship of the North Auckland Bowling Centre was held in Whangarei on Wednesday. J. Cowie (lead), W. Dyer (2nd), R. Michie (3rd) and R. D. Hanlon (skip) represented the Kaitaia Club executive. A team skipped by E". Woolich of the Whangarei Club won outright, winning all 5 games. Hanlon’s team won 3 games and lost the other two by the narrowest of margins, one of which was against the ultimate winner. Around the Kaitaia Greens Two further matches were played in the first round of the Championship Pairs. T. Hales and V. Kingdon j defeated J. Dykes and H. 'Saunders ; 17-16, and J. Steen and R. Ryan de- ' feated A. Fittall and W. Parker 2321. W. Parker demonstrated in this 1 game that he is a player that is never : beaten until the final bowl is played, i He was 7 down on the board when 1 the 20th end was commenced, with Ryan holding the game well in hand. I However Steen failed his partner for i the first time during the match to | play past kitty and Fittall drew all : three bowls. Ryan in endeavouring for the trail, missed and failed to save with his last, and Parker, utilising his three bowls, scored the possible 6 to be only one behind with the final end to play. Fittal held the shot until Ryan drew in close with his second to last bowl, and Parker failed to dislodge him with a drive. It was indeed a splendid finish. Another particularly good game was played in the Junior Pairs when N. Boyd and J. Crosby defeated A. Rae and K. Kimber after a tie on the 21st, the extra end deciding the issue by one in favour of Crosby and Boyd. It was fine bowling on the part of Rae and Kimber to run two such able opponents so close and fully exemplified tha, though Crosby and Boyd appealed certainties it can never be told until the numbers go up. Besides being able to play in the junior grade, J. Crosby has won his way to the fourth round of the Senior Singles Championship with still both lives intact, and has also recorded two wins in the one life Singles Handicap. Crosby’s progress in the game of bowls has been truly phenomenal considering that he only commented playing the game last season.
