i Owing to the No. 1 green being , closed last Saturday, not all the I matches in the second round of the j Singles Championship of the Kaitaia Bowling Club were played. It is hoped that these games will be com- [ pleted this week. Results of the matches played were : Two-Lifers : Cowie defeated Kingdon, 17-16. Hammond defeated Dykes, 25-11. Steen defeated Dyer, 19-16. Kunicich defeated Bird, 27-11. Crosby defeated Michie, 17-16. Freeman defeated Gale, 36-7. Hanlon defeated Mclntosh, 24-14. Parker defeated Durney, 20-8. Maria a bye. One-Lifers : Bidmead defeated Wendell, 22-17. Simms defeated Foster, 20-9. ! Clark defeated Surman, 21-17. Thompson defeated Steed, 22-9. Braithwaite defeated Hoskin, 18-11. Beazley defeated N. Wilkinson, 17-13. The weather was ideal for bowls on Saturday. 64 players taking part in the draw. Many of these bowlers were playing for the first time on the new green, and found the “fast conditions rather difficult to master after the more holding surface of the old green. The greenkeeper, Mr. Joll, is t 0 be complimented on the manner in which he has transformed this green, which was used for the first time only last season, into one of the fastest and truest surfaces of any green in Northland, and comparable with the larger centres further south. Taaffe Shield R. Lewis’ team successfully staved off C. Werner’s challenge for the coveted trophy, the Taaffe Shield, by 26 points to 12 after the draw on Saturday. The holders (P. Weber, J. Crosby, L. Morpeth and skip R. Lewis) were in good form, but the challengers (H. Mclntosh, W. Dyer, R. Michie and C. Werner) did not receive any of the “breaks.” Committee Meeting Discussion on arrangements for the North Auckland Centre Championship fours to be held on the Kaitaia greens on December 14th occupied a large amount of time at the monthly meeting of the Kaitaia Bowling Club’s Management Committee last night. Mr. D. Hanlon presided. It was decided that the New Year Tournament be run on the aggregate of 14 handicaps. Nominations close on the 21st December. Mr. Farrimond intimated that he was donating a trophy for the first year championship and intending competitors are invited to put their names on the Club’s notice board.

Cowie a bye. One-Lifers Molloy v. Bidmead. Simms v. Thompson. Clark v. Kingdon. Dykes v. Dyer. Bird v. Michie. Gale v. Mclntosh. Durney v. Wright. The winner of Boyd and Reynolds plays Hoskin, and the wipner of Lewis and H. Wilkinson plays Beazley.

GIRLS’ CRICKET ACTIVITY The Kaitaia Girls’ Cricket Club funds will benefit by about £lO as the result of a most successful dance held in the A. and P. Hall last Saturday evening. A large crowd of dancers enjoyed the well varied programme, and the music of Joe Posinkovich’s ox'chestra. Extras were played by Olga Jurlina while Laurie Beazley was m.c. A monte carlo dance was won by Mi-. Bruce Roughsedge and partner. Supper was served by Club members, and the dance programme continued until midnight. it During the weekend another most successful practice was held. Two teams were chosen, and the girls played a match, most of the players 1 showing surprising natural ability..
