No Sunday Pictures

Kaitaia Borough Council Decline Request • Permission for Kerridge Theatres to screen Sunday night films once a month at the Princess Theatre was declined by the Kaitaia Borough Council on Wednesday evening. Total proceeds from the presentation of this programme would be used to send food parcels to Britain. An assurance was given by Kerridge Theatres that no deduction would be made from the gross profits received. Programmes would be suitable and commencing times of the performance would be delayed in order not to interfere with evening church services. Opening the discussion, Cr. F. Weber spoke in favour of the request. He could see no wrong in Sunday pictures. It was preferable to many visitors and boarders walking the streets. Crs. L. G. Thompson, C. B. McKinnon, A. E. Foster and P. G. Quilter were against the pi'oposal. Pictures seven nights a week were unnecessary in a small town like Kaitaia. During the war years it was understandable that permission had been granted limited Sunday screenings in Auckland. Mr. W. 1-1. Atkins expressed the opinion that many people in Kaitaia did not live in their own homes. He had often heard Kaitaia referred to as a “bachelor's town.” A censored Sunday programme would be appreciated by many. Cr. Thompson moved, seconded by Cr. Foster, that the application be declined. Carried.
