JOHN DOLLING ANDREWS Aged about 75 years, Mr. John Dolling Andrews died in the Kaitaia Hospital on Sunday last. A single man, Mr. Andrews had spent the latter years of his life in retirement in Kaitaia. With an extensive knowledge and a wide range of experience, Mr. Andrews was a good speaker on all subjects. New Zealand born, Mr. Andrews was a member of a wealthy family. His father was a former house surgeon at the Auckland Hospital. Mr. Andrews from an early age had a keen desire to travel and the outbreak of the Boer War found him in Canada. He enlisted with a Canadian contingent and was twice wounded in action and taken prisoner. Remaining in South Africa at the conclusion of the war, Mr. Andrews worked for a period in the Johannesburg diamond mines. It is interesting to note that on one occasion he travelled to England with the Canadian Coronation contingent. After four or five years in the mines Mr. Andrews returned to New Zealand and coming north, settled at Takahue on the Ruaroa block, on the property now occupied by Mr. Hugh Job. Here he farmed for close on twenty years before moving to Kaitaia in the early 30s. It is believed that there are relatives in the Waikato area. One of Mr. Andrews’ closest friends was Mr. J. S. Paton of Victoria Valley. The funeral was held on Tuesday, pall bearers being all returned men.

Mr. H. Timbers left on Monday for a business visit to Auckland. Mr. Rhys Williams travelled to Auckland last weekend for a few days. The Rev. L. R. Gilmore is spending a week in Auckland to attend Synod Mr. H. Stensness left yesterday for Hastings where he will spend his annual leave. Miss Alice Crene returned from Kaikohe on Friday. Mrs. Jones of Takapuna has been the guest of Mr. and Mrs. R. White. Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Buckingham cf Hamilton are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Beadle. A family gathering, took place at the home of Mr. Fred White yesterday, the occasion being Mr. White’s ninety-first birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Robin and Mr. Collins of Takapuna, returned home yesterday after a tour of the north and spending a few days in Kaitaia. Mr. Johnston who has been on the relieving staff of the Road Services, returned to his home this week. Mr. and Mrs. Eric Gardner returned from their honeymoon this week. Mrs. M. A. Halliday and Mr. K. B. Halliday arrive this weekend from Whangarei to be the guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Beadle. Mrs. R. Horning is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Carppe of Kaitaia. Mr. Mark Roughsedge Jnr. returned to Auckland on Wednesday. Miss Stone returned to Auckland this morning after holidaying for several weeks with her sister, Mrs. G. L. T. Bradley of Church Road. Mr. Maurice Parker loft on Wednesday for Auckland to attend a medical board, returning to Kaitaia tonight. Miss Daphne Woodall left today for Whangarei en route to Auckland where she will spend her holidays. INSTITUTION OF NEW VICAR Rev. G. O. Adams, Mrs. Adams and family left Kaitaia for Warkworth this week. On Wednesday evening next, November 20, the Right Reverend the Bishop of Auckland will institute Rev. D. N. A. Niblock as Vicar of the Kaitaia Parochial District. The service will be in the Church of the Holy Saviour, Kaitaia, at 7.30 p.m. After the service a welcome social will be held in the Parish Hall. * Children are reminded that the Sunday School picnic will be held on December 7.

KAITAIA KOOKABURRAS Baseball Team Formed The local baseball team formed at a meeting on Friday evening will be known as the Kaitaia Kookoburras. It was decided to enter the team in future competitions. President of the club will be Mr. Rhys Williams, Secretary and Treasurer, Mr. Kei Timbers, and the Committee will comprise Messrs. K. and B. Stimpson, M. Hanlon and B. Thompson.
