New Grocery Award
A new Grocers Award for the Northern Industrial District has been n\ade by the Arbitration Court, operating as from last Monday (November 11). In addition to a new wage scale, the award contains the following clauses with relation to hours of work : “The ordinary hours of assistants shall be not more than 40 per week to be worked as follows : “(a) On each of four days of the week, not more than li hours. “(b) On the day of the late night, not more than 10 hours. “All grocers’ shops (regardless of whether or not assistants are employed) . . . shall be closed not later than 5.30 p.m. on four days of the week and not later than 9 p.m. on cne day of the week. No shop (outside a specified radius) shall open for business earlier than 8 a.m. “All the said shops shall be closed all day on Saturday of each week.” Although the new award is officially intended to operate as from last Monday, the reaction of Kaitaia grocers is as yet unknown though it is practically certain they will still be open tomorrow morning. Tennis Entries in both divisions of the Mangonui Lawn Tennis Association’s competition numbered six. This was announced at an Association meeting last evening. It was decided that the Mangonui sub-Association would affiliate with the Northland Association. A notice of motion was given that games be played on alternate weeks instead of weekly. Matches set down for Saturday may, by mutual agreement, be played if necessary, on Sunday. The draw for the first round on November 23rd is as follows (home teams are mentioned first) : Senior Awanui v. Pukepoto. Takahue v. Kaitaia B. Kaitaia A v. Herekino. Junior Peria B v. Awanui. Herekino v. Takahue. Fairburns v. Peria A. Lili Kraus The Lili Kraus concert in Kaitaia has been put forward to next February. Lili Kraus is to give a recital in the Auckland Town Hall on the 21sc. If she played in Kaitaia on the 19th it is understood that Lili Kraus would not have time for adequate practice at the new piano in the Town Hall.
