PERSONAL \ Misses P. arid. K. McHarty of Devonport, Auckland, are the guests )f Mrs. H. Martin. - Mrs. J. Copland is ssk present away on holiday in Auckland. Miss' J. Newman is visiting Auckland. Mr. H. Hick is away on holiday in Auckland. Mr. J. Berghan of Herekino was the guest of Mrs. F. Kjoller over the weekend. RETURNED SERVICEMEN’S BALL Crowds from far and near attended the Broadwood Returned Serviceman’s Ball on Wednesday 15th May, in the A. and P. Hall, which was beautifully decorated for the occasion with flags of the United Nations, flowers and ferns. Mrs. Cheeseman’s orchestra provided excellent music and Mr. L. Grounds suitably carried out the duties of tn.c. There was a large number of local returned boys present. It was noticeable the return of evening dresses after so many years of comparative absence. Novelty dances were won during the evening by Miss A. Duffin and partner (monte carlo), Miss O. Colebrook and Mr. O. Edwards (Returned Servicemen’s monte carlo), Miss L. Kjoller and Mr. B. Holland (Lucky Partner polonaise) and* Mrs. J. Grounds and Mrs. D. Gundry (monte carlo)*. The Grand March which took place before supper was lead by Mr. and Mrs. F. Holland. After a delicious supper whidh was sc-rved in the pavilion that was also suitably decorated, Mr. A. Yarborough spoke on behalf of the residents of Broadwood welcoming the boys home and expressing the best wishes and prosperity for their futures. Mr. M. Jones appropriately repsonded on behalf of the boys. “For They are Jolly Good Fellows” was then sung and dancing continued to an early hour of the morning. FOOTBALL The Broadwood senior and junior football teams travelled to Punguru on Saturday last, where the former won by 12-0 and the latter suffered defeat by 6-0. Mr. W. Leaf refereed the senior game and Mr. T. Noa the junior. BASKETBALL On Saturday last the Pawarenga basketball team journeyed to Broadwood, where they defeated the home team by 29-12.
