Library Appeal

At the annual meeting of the KaiPublic Library it was again agreed to make an appeal for suitable books. This appeal should affect many homes in the district. How often is a book read by all the family, placed in a bookcase or cupboard to serve no further purpose than the gathering of dust. With winter drawing on, and more time available for reading, an appeal goes out to all readers to help meet this demand. The Borough Council’s grant towards the purchase of new books is inadequate, but the Library is willing to buy any good secondhand books. Those with books to donate or sell aio asked to contact Mrs. Hales, the Librarian. Competition A competition sponsored by the Kaitaia Football Club to raise funds for the purchase of the 3rd Grade team’s jerseys and socks was won by Mr. Logan Morpeth. Sufficient money was raised for this purpose and the remainder will go into the Club’s funds to help meet expenses. Portuguese who settled in Brazil early in the 16th century planted sugar cane and shipped sugar to Portugal in 1526 for sale in Europe; Portugal had a monopoly on the sugar of the world for nearly 200 years.
