KAITAIA

In and About

“Plum Jam” Plum jam should taste all the sweeter to a resident of Kaitaia who won a £5 prize in the “Too Good to Miss” Art Union drawn on Friday. Mrs. C. M. Crene was making plum jam when she decided that she might just as well “have a little flutter” and “plum jam” it was when she came to think out a nom-de-plume. Anyway, it brought the lucky number—-or one of them. Mrs. Crene calculates that three more £5 prizes will just about cover the cost of her contributions over the past several years. Scottish Society’s Ingleside The monthly ingleside of the Scottish Society drew a large attendance of members on Saturday night, the Chief (Mr. R. A. Stewart) presiding. Before commencing the evening’s programme, the Chief referred to the death of Mr. A. Hawthorne, a member of the Society, who had recently passed away in Auckland. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was

passed, those present standing as a sign of respect for the deceased. The programme for the evening was in the capable hands of Messrs. J. W. Hoskin and A. Wright, while community singing was led by Mr. J, Cowie. Well rendered items were given by Messrs. J. W. Parker and G. H. Maxwell, mouth organ solos -by Mr. R Lewis and recitations by Mr. A. E Hollay. A display of Highland Dancing was given by Mr. MacLennan’s pupils. Six new members were added to the Society’s number, bringing the total membership up to 178. Card Evening and Birthday Party An enjoyable card evening was held at the C. S. Puckey’s home on Friday evening, the occasion being in celebration of Mr. Puckey’s birthday. The winning lady at 500 was Mrs A. G. Bell and the winning gentleman Mr. W. Marsh, while consolation prizes went to Mr. C. S. Puckey and Mrs. C. M. Crene. The Hidden Number competition was won by Miss Mary Puckey. Mr. Puckey’s birthday was celebrated in the time-honoured spirit, the birthday cake and certain other refreshments being eulogistically referred to by the guests. During the evening Mr. Puckey was presented with a lovely bouquet of sweets by Mrs. A. G. Bell. KAITAIA EX-PUPILS REMEMBER SCHOOL “It is pleasant to know that old pupils of the Kaitaia District High School still retain sentimental feelings towards the school,” commented Mr. A. E. Hollay, Secretary of the School Committee in expressing appreciation of the action of ex-pupils in connection with school funds. A dance for the school funds had resulted in the very satisfactory sum of £7 10/- being raised. Ex-pupils desired however, that their efforts should be directed to some particular aim in furthering the school’s equipment. Such an aim might be, it was pointed out, the installation of wireless in every class room or movie apparatus for the showing of educational films. It is felt that the helpful attitude of ex-pupils would be much appreciated by parents. KAITAIA OLD PUPILS TO HOLD LEAP YEAR DANCE A meeting of the Kaitaia Old Pupils’ Association was held last night, the Secretary, Mr. Rhys Williams, taking the chair in the absence of the President. Association matters were discussed generally and the headmaster of the school, Mr. A. Bird, who was present, put forward a number of suggestions is to how the Association might help :he school. It was decided to hold a Leap Year Dance on February 29 in aid of the school funds.
