Merry and Bright

Entertainment at Kaitaia A merry and bright entertainment was given by Mrs. Eyre King’s pupils in the A. and P. Hall, Kaitaia, on Tuesday night, before a good attendance. These annual recitals have in the past been keenly appreciated by the district as a whole, besides the parents of the performers, and this year’s function was better, if possible, than its predecessors. Mrs. King, who has attained renown in the county as an expert teacher for various musical pursuits, is to be heartily congratulated on her organisation of such a musical fete as was staged. Her pupils, from the elementary to the advanced grades, all gave the impression of having undergone rigorous and careful schooling.

Departing from the type of programme at recitals wffiich usually consists only of items by pupils, this entertainment included sketches, recitations and songs. Outside talent, headed by Mr. O. Beck, took part in the sketches, one of the prettiest and most effective of which was “Swiss Mountains,” with Mr. Wallace as the yodelling mountaineer. Space does not permit individualising in the following programme, although the items and performers undoubtedly warrants it : Red Riding Hood Ballet—Wilma, Ima and Necia Taaffe, and Lorraine Horsley ; Song, “Brown Eyes” and “Until” Mr. O. Beck; recitation, “Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee”—

Russell White ; violin solo, “Red Gauntlet” and “The Piper of Dargai” Clog nts,klß nstrume ith(sobi. .wh —Dorothy Gardiner ; Clog dance— Necia and Wilma Taaffe ; song, “Indian Love Cal!” and “San Francisco” Mary Sutton ; pianoforte duec, “Lit ile Boy Blue” and Bright as a Button”—Mrs. King and Necia Tuafle ; sketch, “Baby”—Mrs. King, Mr. Beck, Donald Claasen and Joan Christei .en ; Vio'in and Piano, “Lullaby” Frcezia White and Dorothy Gardiner ; tableau Eivene Matthews Audrey Gill, Gladys Mumby, Ruby Timbers, Mavis Micliie, Wendy and Bebe Ring ; scenery, “Swiss Mountains” —Mr. Wallace (yodeller) ; “Yodelling Coon”—Mr. Wallace; sketch, “Telling Sally”—Mrs. King, Mr. Beck and Don Claasen ; song, “Yo San” and “I Sometimes Wonder” Mary Sutton. At the conclusion of the entertainment, the presentation of certificates to fifteen pupils who were successful in the examinations this year, w*as made by Mr. L. Peace, local representative of the Royal Schools of Music. A dance followed supper, Miss J. Christensen supplying the music.

FISHING ON THE WEST COASI

Whether it’s the weather, the fish or the prowess of the ladies, nevertheItss the fact remains that the “Aussie” visitors to Kaitaia, Mrs. Roberts and Miss Wagener, again delved with considerable success into the deep depths of the briny last Sunday. Casting their lines at random off the promontories of the Bluff, they very soon began to complain bitterly about the fish not giving them respite (net result : 20 thumping schnapper). Tiring of making such a hole in the quantity of that species in the sea, they turned their attention to the net and acting under their directions the net-men secured 50 flatties in two hauls. DEATH AT PAPARORE Pat Job, a Maori aged 35 years, residing at Paparore, was found yesterday morning in a paddock about a mile from his home with his throat cut and a razor lyng by his side. Job who is a married man with one child, w*as of rather low mentality and about a year ago he became unbalanced in his mind but he recovered. He gave no indication of any intention to take his life. An inquest was held by Mr. L. A. Mclntosh, District coroner, which after some evidence had been taken, was adojurned sine die, for medical evidence. Death of Mr. Wigley The death has occurred at Christchurch of Mr. W. C. Wigley, at one time a practising solicitor in Kaitaia. The late Mr. Wigley has been in indifferent health for a considerable time, it being largely for health reasons that he left this district to return south.
