FREE MILK FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN.

In a number of the smaller centres in the North, as in other parts of New Zealand, the children attending the primary schools are being given a half pint bottle of milk each day. The service is free to the children, the Government paying for the supply and the local school teachers and school committees organising the distribution. Each child has its own bottle which is sterilized after use and sealed after the milk is put in. Government inspectors examine the milk supply at frequent intervals. Unfortunately in this district, although efforts have been made by the school committee to obtain the service for the children these have failed because of the committee’s inability to obtain such a milk supply and service as would pass the Government test. Bulk supply is not permitted and the milk must be in suitable bottles and the bottles have to be cleaned to certain requirements. Until a local supply can be obtained, the advantage of this free Government service will not be available to the children in this part of the North.

“This is the first time that the Town Board has to place on record thanks for an appreciation of any kind.” Kaitaia Town Board chairman when receiving address of appreciation from Returned Soldiers’ Association.
