WAINUI-AHIPARA INSTITUTE MEETING

The annual general meeting of the Wainui-Ahipara Women’s Institute took place at the home of Mrs. Stuart Masters, the president, Mrs. Shirley Masters, presiding over a good attendance of members.

The election of officers for the coming year resulted in the following being returned : President Mrs, Shirley Masters (re-elected) ; VicePresident —Mrs. L. Masters ; Secretary—Mrs. Morice ; Social Hostesses —Mrs. C. Masters and Miss A. Spyve. The balance sheet showed a very satisfactory profit, and plans were made for a play to be entered in the forthcoming drama festival. At the conclusion of business, the meeting took the form of a kitchen tea, the guest of honour being Miss Z. Berghan, who is to be married very soon. Competitions of various kinds helped to pass a very happy afternoon.

DEATH OF ANN ELIZABETH MURRAY

The death occurrred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. H. Coultas, Mercer, of Ann Elizabeth, the relict of the late Peter Murray, in her 83rd year. The interment took place at the Kaitaia Anglican cemetery on Tuesday, the Rev. E. Blackwood Moore officiating at the graveside. Deceased was born in England and at the age of 20 married Mr. Murray, leaving almost immediately afterwards for New Zealand, landing at Dunedin after a six months’ voyage in the sailing ship, “Himalaya.” After some years in the South Island, where Mr. Murray was teaching at various schools, they came North, settling for a time at Takahue and later Mr. Murray was storekeeping at Kaitaia, prior to returning to the teaching profession at Herekino. The late Mr. Murray died about 10 years ago and was buried at Kaitaia. Since that time Mrs. Murray has lived with her daughter and for the past four years has been bed-ridden after suffering indifferent health for some years prior to that. Three daughters, Mrs. C. Brent, of Sydney, Mrs. F. Ford, Auckland, and Mrs. Coultas of Mercer, with three sons, Robert and Arthur, Herekino, and Edwin, Kaitaia, are left to mourn their loss. FIRE DRILL AT KAITAIA SCHOOL On Tuesday fire drill was carried out at the Kaitaia D.H. School and so well are the children trained by the staff that within 50 seconds from the alarm being given every person was out of the school and all doors closed so that no draught could be admitted to fan a fire. The children formed into line at allotted places, well clear of the buildings, and the roll was called by the teachers to ascertain that all the children were out of the school buildings. Every teacher has an allotted task, some closing the doors, others caring for the children while the head is the last to leave the buildings. Jumble Sale For Ahipara Native School Funds A most successful jumble sale, organised by Mrs. P. Braik, was held at the Ahipara Native School, the proceeds going to the school equipment fund, which will benefit to the extent of £l6 from the efforts of the organisers. Certificate Of Fitness For Motor Vehicles There are still a number of motor vehicles in this district that have not so far, been put through the test for a certificate of fitness, as required under the Motor Regulations and as it is probable that the authorities will, within a week or so, be conducting a drive in this area to ascertain which vehicles have not passed the test, motorists are advised to secure the required certificate without delay. It is probable that quite a number of old model vehicles will be put off the road as they will not be worth the expenditure that will be required to put them into a sufficient state of repair to comply with the regulations.
