Mrs. A. Masters of Pukepoto, has returned from her trip south. Miss M. Blyth of Awanui, is on a holiday trip to Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. L. Peace have returned to Kaitaia after a trip south. Mr. Gordon MacKenzie is spending a holiday with his parents in Kaitaia. Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Brent have returned to Kaitaia from a trip to Auckland. Miss K. Urlich has been transferred from the Ahipara to the Pukepoto school staff. Mr. R. Barlow, Clerk of the Court at Kaitaia, has returned from a holiday trip south. Miss Mary Taurau of Pakotoi, has been appointed to the staff of the Ahipara native school. Mrs. F. Ford of Auckland, is visiting her daughter, Mrs. H. Mclntosh of Kaitaia. Mr. J. B. Arthur of the Awanui Post Office staff, has received notice of his transfer to Te Puke. • Mr. Peguero of Auckland, was in Kaitaia this week as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. H. Mclntosh. Mr. K. Matthews of Auckland, is visiting Kaitaia as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Farrimond. Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Puckey and Miss Mary Puckey have returned to Kaitaia after a trip to Auckland. Miss Jean Campbell of Auckland, has been spending a holiday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. Campbell of Paranui. Miss Dorothy Puckey of Kaitaia, who is an inmate of an Auckland Hospital, is progressing favourably after an operation. Miss Merlet, District Nurse, is at present away on her annual leave, and Miss Fletcher is relieving as District Nurse at Kaitaia. Miss Doris Blyth has returned to Wt.odville, Hawke’s Bay, after spending a long holiday with her family, Mr. and Mrs. E. Blyth of Paranui. Mr. F. J. Tai- T! M.Coni.. has been appointed head of the Kaitaia D.H. School, and Mr. J. S. Webster M.Sc., has been appointed second assistant. Friends of Miss Mary Blyth will be pleased to hear that she has recovered from her illness and has returned to her home at Paranui from the County Hospital, Kaitaia. The Rev. P. Houghton, vicar of St. Mark’s, Remuera, accompanied by Mrs. Houghton, is visiting this district, and they are the guests of the Rev. and Mrs. E. Blackwood Moore, of the Vicarage, Kaitaia. Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Coultas, formerly of this district, but now of Mercer, visited Kaitaia this week and are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. H. McIntosh. Mr. Coultas has returned home but Mrs. Coultas will be spending some time in this district visiting her many friends. SOCIAL FUNCTIONS TO MISS ZITA BERGHAN In view of her approaching marriage, Miss Zita Berghan was the guest of honour at a kitchen afternoon on Thursday last, it being tendered by the Wainui-Ahipara Women’s Institute, and a very enjoyable time was spent. Competitions during the afternoon caused much amusement, Mrs. Morrison, Mrs. Morice and Mrs. L. Masters being the winners. A very dainty afternoon tea was served and the numerous parcels were opened by the guest of honour, who was also the recipient of a pair of silver serviette rings, suitably engraved, being presented by the president on behalf of the Institute members. Miss Berghan very suitably expressed her appreciation of the many gifts, and the singing of “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow” followed. In view of her approaching marriage to Mr. Ben Buckley, Miss Zita Berghan was tendered a gift evening in the Parish Hall, Kaitaia, last night Thursday, by her many friends. Mr. P. floor arrangements, saw to it that there was not a dull moment, everyone enjoying the games and dances. Mr. L. Dye tickled the ivories. A monte carlo went to Miss A. Hodgson and Mr. D. Urlich, while a waltzing competition, or rather an endurance test, saw Miss M. Puckey and Miss A. Gallagher the last on their feet, the others were on the floor. All gathered round the two large tables for the toast to the guest of the evening, this being proposed by Mr. J. O’Sullivan, Miss Zita Berghan responding. There was a fine array of gifts, both useful and ornamental. ACCLIMATISATION AFFAIRS ~—— ' 4 A meeting of the council of the “ Mangonui - Whangaroa Acclimatisation Society was held at Mangonui last Saturday when various questions in connection with the forthcoming shooting season were discussed. A suggestion was put forward by one member that district committees be formed to co-operate with the council in an endeavour to create a greater interest among sportsmen in the work of the Society, but after discussion, no action is to be taken in regard to this at present. Government Health Committee in The North The Government Health Committee which is investigating maternity facilities in New Zealand, arrived in Kaitaia by car yesterday afternoon and met Dr. Rule, medical superintendent of the County Hospital, Dr. Torrie and district nurses. The members of the committee are Mesdames P. Fraser, Hutchinson and Kent-Johnston, and Drs. D. G. McMillan (chairman), T. S. Corkill and T. L. Paget, and Dr. Cook, Medical Officer of Health for the North, is with the party. Dr. McMillan said the committee was paying particular attention to Maori health problems in the North. The committee had just commenced to function, having held its first tour of inspection through the Wairarapa a fortnight ago, and it was too early to comment on its work.
