Boats Held Up

Owing to continued rough weather neither the “Tiri” or the “Tahoe” were able to come through to Awanui this week. Both boats left Auckland but the rough weather forced them to take shelter at Kauwau Island. The Northern S. S. Coy. are despatching the “Waiotahi” with a full cargo of goods from Auckland tomorrow, Saturday, for Awanui, but as a very high sea is running and a strong gale still raging on the East Coast, it is problematical even if this boat which is larger and higherpowered than either-of the ones that are now sheltering, will be able to get through. This is the longest period, a record, that rough weather has held up shipping at Awanui, and many of the stores in the district are short of a number of lines. Dance at Oruru Last night, Thursday, a most successful dance was held at Oruru, the proceeds being for the newly formed Ping Pong Club, and as a result of the efforts of the organisers, the Club will commence the season with quite a substantial credit. The Ritz Orchestra was there with the music, and they were assisted by Miss N. Taylor who played an extra. The floor arrangements were under the control of Mr. R. G. Dibble, and the monte carlo was won by Miss Forsythe and partner. The supper served by the ladies, added greatly to the evening’s enjoyment. Kaitaia P.W.M.U. Meeting A meeting of the Kaitaia branch of the P.W.M.U. was held in the Church hall, yesterday, Thursday afternoon, there being a good attendance of members, Mrs. McKinnon, the president, being in the chair. A missionary reading was given by the president after which arrangements were made for the birthday luncheon to be held in May. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames C. McKinnon and A. F. MacKenzie.
